I’ve been where you are — stuck in a job that feels like it’s chipping away at your soul with every paycheck. It’s a hard place to be, and I know its weight.

But I know there’s a way out, and I’m here to help you find it.

Take heart if you feel like you’re selling your soul to get by. You’re stronger than any job can make you feel.

Hope is one thing that can help us get through the darkest times.” — Dalai Lama

The Ice Cream Shop from Hell

My first “real job” was working in a local ice cream shop located in a small town in New Hampshire where I grew up. I was only 13 and hungry to earn more than my meager and inconsistent allowance or earnings from landscaping in the neighborhood.

The shop was named Frankensundae, and it’s long gone. However, I’ll never forget the first and only day I worked there because the two managers, who were sons of the owner, towel-whipped me.

Not long into my first ship on “training day,” one of the older boys asked me to go into the attic and fetch more cups for the customers. I said, “But there are plenty of cups here. Why do we need more?”
