PRX Partners with Gen-Z and Night Vale Presents

PRX announced today that it’s teaming up with independent podcast networks Gen-Z Media and Night Vale Presents.

“Since our founding, PRX has empowered producers to operate independently,” PRX CEO Kerri Hoffman said. “With PRX, Gen-Z and Night Vale Presents can scale their own creative ambitions, have access to cutting-edge technology, work with supportive brands and join a community of amazing shows.”

PRX will provide marketing, ad sales and technology for the existing shows and new podcasts in development on each network, and Gen-Z Media and Night Vale Presents will continue to operate as independently owned networks.

The partnership with Gen-Z marks PRX’s first foray into children’s podcast programming.

“All eyes are on podcasts for children in 2018,” Hoffman said. “Parents want alternatives to standard screen time, and children are excited by imaginative storytelling and authentic characters. Gen-Z is leading the pack, and we are thrilled to welcome them into our family of curated shows.”

Gen-Z was established in 2017, and its founders are known for hit kids’ shows, including Peabody Award-winning The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel, Christmas Is Coming! and The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian.

“We’re thrilled to be among PRX’s curated, best-in-class shows,” said Benjamin Strouse, CEO of Gen-Z Media. “The market for kids and family podcasts is exploding, and with PRX as a partner, we couldn’t be more excited that Gen-Z shows will reach new audiences and more listeners than ever.”

In pooling their resources, PRX and Gen-Z look forward to tapping into the potential of the children’s podcast market. And PRX and Night Vale Presents see opportunities for the expansion and sustainability of independent podcasting.

“At Night Vale Presents, we’ve long been thinking about how wonderful it would be if there were a collective of independent podcast networks,” said Christy Gressman, partner at Night Vale Presents. “With this partnership, we get access to an incredible, smart and nimble sales team and to PRX’s proprietary ad and distribution technology. Most importantly, we’re excited to continue our mission of bringing new and diverse voices into the world of podcasting with the support of a like-minded partner that understands our unique needs.”

The announcement will dramatically expand PRX’s library in the scripted fiction genre, a niche previously filled by one Radiotopia show, The Truth.

Founded in 2015, Night Vale Presents has helped to define the genre of scripted fiction in on-demand audio. The show that started it all, Welcome to Night Vale, has an intensely engaged fan base and is the basis of two New York Times bestselling books.

Both Gen-Z and Night Vale Presents plan to launch a spate of new podcasts this year, as well, with Night Vale Presents’ catalog doubling and Gen-Z’s quadrupling.

PRX Expands into Emerging Podcast Categories by Partnering with Two Major Podcast Networks, Gen-Z Media and Night Vale Presents

These partnerships will give PRX a foothold into children’s and fictional podcasting.

Cambridge, MA (January 29, 2018) — PRX CEO Kerri Hoffman announced today that PRX has formed two new partnership agreements with podcast innovators Gen-Z Media and Night Vale Presents. As a leading media company known for cutting-edge content and for connecting top talent with resources and audience, PRX will provide marketing, ad sales and technology for the existing shows and new podcasts in development.

This will be PRX’s first foray into children’s podcast programming, and it will dramatically expand the company’s library in the scripted fiction genre. Gen-Z Media and Night Vale Presents will continue to operate as independently owned networks.

“Since our founding, PRX has empowered producers to operate independently,” Hoffman said. “With PRX, Gen-Z and Night Vale Presents can scale their own creative ambitions, have access to cutting-edge technology, work with supportive brands and join a community of amazing shows.”

Gen-Z was established in 2017 and its founders are known for hit kids’ shows such as the Peabody Award-winning The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel, Christmas is Coming and The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian. Gen-Z produces and acquires podcasts with unique and diverse stories for kids, tweens and their families.

“All eyes are on podcasts for children in 2018,” Hoffman said. “Parents want alternatives to standard screen time, and children are excited by imaginative storytelling and authentic characters. Gen-Z is leading the pack, and we are thrilled to welcome them into our family of curated shows.”

Gen-Z plans to launch new shows throughout 2018, starting in March with the fast-paced and hilarious quiz show Pants on Fire; Six Minutes, a thrilling serial adventure featuring a mysterious 12-year-old girl found with no memory of her past and no explanation for her miraculous abilities; and The Mayan Crystal, the story of a modern Mayan girl’s magical journey into the rainforest to save her village from an ancient evil. Shows premiering in the spring and summer also include Gen-Z’s presentation of the hit science podcast,Tumble, the historical fiction series Young Ben Franklin, and Becoming Mother Nature, each delivering smart, sophisticated and immersive audio entertainment to a new generation.

Similarly, PRX and Night Vale Presents see huge opportunities for the expansion and sustainability of independent podcasting.

“At Night Vale Presents, we’ve long been thinking about how wonderful it would be if there were a collective of independent podcast networks,” said Christy Gressman, Partner at Night Vale Presents. “It seemed natural to reach out to PRX to explore collaboration. With this partnership, we get access to an incredible, smart and nimble sales team and to PRX’s proprietary ad and distribution technology. Most importantly, we’re excited to continue our mission of bringing new and diverse voices into the world of podcasting with the support of a like-minded partner that understands our unique needs.”

Founded in 2015 by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, Night Vale Presents has been a groundbreaking leader in creating and pushing the boundaries of scripted fiction in on-demand audio. The show that started it all, Welcome to Night Vale, created an intensely engaged fan base and became the basis of two wildly popular novels. New shows by Fink and Cranor, Alice Isn’t Dead and Within the Wires, helped cement Night Vale Presents’ reputation as a home for innovative fiction podcasts.

The network has continually worked to bring new voices into the medium, producing shows with artists who have not created podcasts before, such as The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air) by Julian Koster of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Music Tapes, and the non-fiction shows Conversations with People Who Hate Me by Dylan Marron and I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats with John Darnielle.

Night Vale Presents plans to double their show roster over the next year, including new shows Pounded in the Butt by My Own Podcast with Chuck Tingle, coming March 14, and Adventures in New America from director Stephen Winter, launching April 20. Future projects include shows from musician Shamir and musician and theater artist Dane Terry.

Listeners can play current Gen-Z and Night Vale Presents podcasts now, and they should look out for new shows beginning in February.
