Creating a Medium Publication

Medium has done an excellent job of covering the basics of publication creation. See the Publications page on the Medium Help Center website for help getting started, editing publication settings, adding writers and editors, customizing your header and home page, and setting up navigation. There’s even a troubleshooting section.

Some trouble isn’t covered in the troubleshooting section, however, such as:

You must use the classic design version if you want a large header

You’ve added a large background image, and that image is now displayed in the resulting large header on your home page. You now decide to “Opt in” to the beta design version to see those “more expressive design tools” advertised. But, oops, now your header has shrunk considerably and your image won’t fit.

Don’t bother searching for the option for a large, medium, or small header; that option isn’t in the beta version. Unless you want to replace your header image with one that will fit, your only option is to “Opt out” of beta.

In the classic version, a background image is degraded if you add your publication title to the header
