Upcycling Craft Workshop — Paper Lanterns

According to Chinese tradition, a red lantern is a symbol of good life and a prosperous business. To herald in the Chinese New Year, join us in making lanterns and fishes from upcycled red packets.
This programme is suitable for children ages 9 to 14, and is jointly organised by Punggol CC WEC.

Singapore Literature Book Club: My Mother-In-Law’s Son by Josephine Chia

Singapore Literature Book Club discusses books by both well-known and emerging Singapore authors, touching on topics close to home. In January, the book club will be discussing My Mother-In-Law’s Son by Josephine Chia.
My Mother-In-Law’s Son centres round a Peranakan woman, Swee Gek, who is in an abusive marriage but is constrained by the limitations of women in her time to take positive action. Narrated from the perspectives of different characters, the book is a revealing story of a Singapore and her people struggling to find their feet in the aftermath of a war.
The author will be with us for the session, so do join as we discuss her book!

Pro Series: Photography (Digital Compositing)

Join composite photographer Guoxin as he delves deeper into the concepts of digital composition, as well as techniques that add that certain flair to a fantasy world. Guoxin will also be walking through his process in a live-demo.
About the Speaker
Guoxin is an IT consultant who picked up composite photography as a hobby to get out of the mundane programming world five years ago. With science fiction and astronomy as his inspiration, Guoxin uses tools such as Capture One Pro and Adobe Photoshop to create surreal worlds. Guoxin has worked with corporations including Western Digital, HWM Magazine in-collaboration with Adobe, and Ogilvy.

Communities: Travel and Culture Explorers

Communities is an alternative learning environment in which you can pick up a plethora of skills by sharing and experimenting with others.
The group helps one to explore the world, armed with deeper cultural insights and empathy. The group introduces places beyond the usual tourist hangouts and discuss how to connect with locals. Members are encouraged to share their experience from their travels and figure out local trends, happenings, business opportunities and the aspirations of the people far and near.

How to Fall in Love with Classics (Graphic Novels): Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen

How to Fall in Love with Classics is a lecture series that celebrate the classics. This series looks lovingly and thoughtfully at a few texts to understand the special pleasure we get from them.
Every lecture will explore one classic for its various forms of meaning. The text will be dissected to reveal connections it makes to ideas in history, culture, and society. Series 6 will look at four graphic novels: Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, and Sonny Liew’s The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye.

Travel Writing in the Age of Instagram

In the age of Instagram and Tripadvisor, the art of travel writing has definitely evolved. Shivaji Das, the author of three travel memoirs and photography books, will be conducting a workshop on travel writing in a digital age.
The workshop aims to equip both the beginner and occasional travel writer with an understanding of the following:
- Essentials skills for good travel writing
- Basics of photography and video for travel writing
- Making most of social media: Blogs, Instagram, Youtube
- How to get published?
- Paying the bills and more from travel writing
- Ethics of travel writing
- Creating, sustaining and extending your brand as a travel writer
The workshop will be administered through a lecture, several exercises and group discussions. Recommendations for background reference materials will be provided.
About the Author
Shivaji’s writings have been published in TIME, Asian Geographic, Outlook Traveller, Jakarta Post, Conscious Magazine, and Freethinker. His interviews have been featured on BBC, CNBC, The Economist, Travel Radio Australia, Around the World TV, etc.
