Things to Do at Our Libraries — Online Edition (November 2020)
The end of the year is soon to be upon us! November brings us closer to closure, and with it the wisdom of hindsight. Life may be a great teacher — but we can still take lessons and inspiration from others.
This month, we bring you programmes that shine the spotlight on in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), coping with young onset dementia, and planning financially for your child’s education.
Love Division X Palooka — Lifestyle | Zoom
7 November 2020 (Sat)
3.00 pm to 4.00 pm
The Love Division Series dissects the fears and vulnerabilities we feel and hide as adults. This special session — a collaboration with Brango Publishing Solutions — broaches the subject of masculinity, taboos and IVF with remarkable levity and humour.
Through rounds of assisted fertility treatments, bad news, and hours in waiting rooms, screenwriter James Thoo wrote Palooka: 12 Rounds To Fatherhood, his no-holds-barred, humour-infused memoir about the ordeal of what he calls “one prolonged uppercut to the scrotum”.
Discover this heartwarming journey of zero-quit, and find out from the author exactly what happens behind the scenes of IVF. Whether you are going through some downtime, are an IVF specialist keen to mentally prepare patients for the procedure, or contemplating IVF yourself, hear from the author about how he toughed it out.
Due to mature content, this session is suitable for those aged 18 and above.

Ever wondered if you can still be independent after a dementia diagnosis? As caregivers, might we inadvertently cause the decline of our loved ones by caring too much? Find out how to maintain your independence for as long as possible after a diagnosis, and get tips on how to support loved ones with dementia and help them lead a fruitful life through Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. This is part three of a series organised in collaboration with Alzheimer’s Disease Association by speaker Emily Ong, a dementia self-advocate and volunteer trainer.
This programme is suitable for those aged 50 and above.
About the Speaker
Emily was first diagnosed with neurodegenerative disorders at the age of 49, and provisionally diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) when she was 51. Emily has been a participant and co-facilitator of the Voices for Hope programme under the Alzheimer’s Disease Association, and passionately advocates for a dementia-enabling environment.
