Many things have changed since I first got introduced to the fun world of fitness at the wise old age of 17 years old.

I remember the days that it was en vogue to wear $100 Affliction t-shirts to the gym. I’ve seen countless diet fads come and go. I was even around for the dawn of exergaming (hey, it’s not the worst idea if you just need to move around more).

But the one constant that’s held true from 2005 all the way to today is the market saturation of over-hyped, under-delivering health & fitness supplements.

The truth is that a lot of the nutrition from the supplements we see on the grocery store shelves can be pretty easily attained through diet alone, likely making many of them unnecessary for the majority of people. But there are some exceptions to this rule.

Below are a few supplements that I’ve personally taken over the years and have had a positive experience with; they did indeed move the needle in both my health and my performance in the gym. They’re simple, pretty cost-effective, and if you’re deficient in any of these areas, they can be of tremendous benefit.

1. Vitamin D
