Book Review: Make Money on Medium: Build Your Audience and Grow Your Income with Medium.com
A few weeks ago, Nicole Akers wrote a book on how to use medium and how to make the most out of it. At that time, I was reading Sun Stand Still by Steven Furtick and her book was next in line.
In Make Money on Medium, Nicole shares her nuggets on writing on Medium. For those of you who don’t know Nicole, she’s the editor of Publishous, one of the top Medium publications.
Although I usually share my favourite quotes from books that I read, this is more of nuggets from Making Money on Medium.
What I Liked About The Book:
Nicole moves us step by step in how to use Medium as a writer, literary. From creating a Medium account to earning from Medium. It’s a must-read for new Medium writers and I wish I had it a year ago.
Favourite Nuggets yon Make Money From Medium
The title and the introduction are the most important part of an article. From there, we decide whether we will click to read or not, and the time spent reading the article.
Simply put, hook the reader.
Do these three hook the reader?
Delete words like really, too, very, that(in most cases), anyways, so, I think and actually.
Simplify expressions like:
“At this point in time — now.
A majority of-most.
On account of-because.
Fewer in number-fewer.
In my opinion-I think.
Large numbers of -many.”
Summary. Always wrap up your piece with a summary. Don’t leave it hanging.
Getting 100 followers is your first milestone. Achieve that quickly and you’re on your way! You’ve hacked a month of work to a day or two.
Follow people who engage and then offer them outstanding content and issue applause where due.
Remember engagement is at least three-fold. It involves applause, highlights and comments.
I am a writer in The Startup, Publishous, The Post-Grad Survival, P.S I Love You, The Writers Guild, a Few Words and my own publication, Blog.Write Heal. What I love about Publishous is they publish quickly and in this regard, I am able to churn and publish at a timeline favourable to me.
If you’re a new writer thinking about publications, here’s Nicole’s advice:
You don’t start with publishing with pubs. You start by having a strong profile and publishing quality content consistently, for at least a month.
She also advices against making material changes after a piece has been published or pulling articles from publications after being offered a book deal. You can pull articles from a publication, but there’s a way to go about it. Although you wrote it, the publication is also invested in the piece(s) you write.
On Making Money
Making Money on Medium has the last chapter as Making Money With The Medium Partner Program.
If you read the book and have come to this chapter, by now you already know how to write on medium, get followers and structure your articles.
If you want to learn more from a Medium guru herself, buy Nicole’s book (not an affiliate link), write the pieces of advice that are new to you or you’re yet to implement and start acting on them.
