“My life sucks.’

“Life is too difficult.”

“Why is my life so awful.”

If you’ve said any of these things, you might have life dysmorphia.

This isn’t a recognised medical diagnosis, and it might not ruin your life in the same way as body dysmorphia, but it will blight your days.

What you have doesn’t matter; you feel unhappy with your life. You focus on all the things you don’t like or have.

Maybe you don’t have what you think you should have. You want a different job, relationship, or even family.

Are you using excessive consumerism to try and make your life look better? Ryan told me there are frequent family arguments in his house because he likes buying things he sees on social media. His daughter is an environmentalist and a big fan of Lauren Singer, who famously went viral for fitting a year’s worth of all the waste she’d created in one 16oz mason jar.

Ryan knows he buys more than he needs, but since life isn’t meeting his needs, he feels justified despite the arguments.

His daughter thinks they have more than necessary; he says they should have more. Ryan has life dysmorphia.
