I’ve been reading Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild and wondering if I would take off on a journey into the wilderness by myself. Part of me completely relates to the main character, because I’ve done something similar, and reading the book awakens the desire to do it again.

The book tells the true story of Christopher McCandless, and his journey to find himself. While I could never see myself going to the great Alaskan wilderness — mostly because I hate being cold — I have gone on a journey of self-discovery.

My family hiked Camino de Santiago with our kids. It’s been a while, but this book reminds me of why we embarked on the journey and the need to get away from everything that holds us back in the world of comfort and connectedness.

At the time of our journey into the wilderness we were at a crossroads in our personal lives, and we needed some time and distance to sort things out. The kids had just finished their studies for the school year, so we sold everything we owned down to our most treasured possessions, put them in a storage unit, and set out on the journey of a lifetime.
