Let’s be honest; leaving all sentimentality aside, a marriage is an agreement that only benefits one person while the other gets doomed.

If we look at the general advantages of marriage (beyond what it represents for each person personally), we see that it is simply an agreement to protect someone financially in case things go “wrong”:

  • Property acquired during marriage is considered jointly owned, meaning both spouses have equal rights to its possession, use, and disposal.
  • Spouses are typically entitled to inherit from each other and may be exempt from inheritance taxes on property received from their deceased spouse.
  • Married spouses can often make medical decisions for each other if the other spouse becomes incapacitated and unable to make decisions for themselves.
  • Married couples may be able to file taxes jointly, which can lead to tax savings.
  • If a marriage ends, spouses are entitled to a fair division of property, assets, and debts and may also be entitled to spousal support (alimony).
