Of the more than 2.5 billion pounds of avocados consumed annually in the United States, more than 8 million pounds are consumed on Super Bowl Sunday, according to Google and Wikipedia. The Haas Avocado Company, through its board, shares a much higher number; more than 162 million pounds of avocados are consumed during the big game.

Between the seven-layer dip and the guacamole, nearly 9,000 hand injuries happen annually. More than half of those injuries occur during Super Bowl weekend. That leaves about 25 people daily seeking emergency care and surgery in extreme cases, due to avocado hand.

That’s a lot of people slicing and dicing America’s favorite fruit. It’s the pits if you get taken out of the action due to injury before the big game ever begins.

Be careful while prepping game food. Avocados are a soft and squirmy food, so people take radical measures to remove the pit. Missing the fruit or the pit may leave you caught red-handed. You don’t want to bleed on the guacamole.

We’ve heard a similar argument:

It’s not the avocado itself that’s the problem, but the way the fruit is handled.
