Big moments and thinking about our futures is scary, but it shouldn’t be.
“While I’m not going to cut you off social assistance, I’d like for us to discuss where you want to be going in your life. Normally someone with this much money above the threshold, it means they’re saving up for something bigger, like moving or buying a car.”
“So let’s have that conversation.”
“Well… I’m not quite sure where I want to go in my life. You have my bank statements so you know my life fluctuates a lot.”
“That and I’m not sure how long I’ll be financial stable long term so it’s tricky for me to plan anything big.”
As part of being on social assistance, I have to have a meeting with my case manager once per year to go over my finances, and sign documents. But the biggest part is having the conversation.
It’s a conversation that we’ve been exposed to since we’re kids and those kinds of questions becomes heavier the older we get.
