I’m Trying a New Morning Ritual to Save My Sanity
I suggest you do the same if you want better mental health
On a typical morning, I wake to my alarm on my phone and hit the snooze at least twice. I like to savor those last few minutes of being asleep and in bed. After I stop snoozing, I usually roll over and pet one of the kittens that have curled up nearby to snuggle. So far, my morning is relatively peaceful.
Then, I reach for my phone. I can’t resist doom-scrolling through Facebook and Instagram. The latest news is a weight. It’s indistinguishable these days from an Onion news story, but it’s all real. Real and scary. Before my feet hit the ground, I’m anxious about the world I’m living in and wondering how anyone could be so dumb that they would endorse any of what’s happening right now.
Once, I would have been civil. I would have respected people’s rights to believe differently. But that was before the President of the United States said that he doesn’t know if he has to abide by the Constitution and clearly doesn’t understand what the Declaration of Independence was for. A man who uses AI photos to display himself as the Pope after the actual Pope’s untimely death. I’ve lost my ability to be civil in all of the what-the-actual-f*ckness of any given day.
