That’s how she described men who immerse themselves in traditional masculine interests — pubs, hunting, fishing, and the like. They likely enjoy smoking cigars, playing pool, watching things explode, and drinking and jesting with their cronies. They get together to talk about sports and politics, cars and titties, tell sexist jokes about women, pretend they know everything, and argue about things that don’t matter.
I was still a young woman.
Impressionable and naïve to the world’s ways, people, and men.
Especially men.
But I noticed that the world seemed to have one image of what a man should be — strong, dominant, and dismissive of emotion. It wasn’t until I met my ex-boyfriend’s mother that I truly understood the limitations of this stereotype.
