I’ve Never Been Prouder to Be a Tree Hugger
Now it’s your turn to choose
It’s time to go outside and hug a tree — and to do more than hug a tree. It’s time to reconnect to that inner child who worshipped nature wholeheartedly. It’s time to take a stand, a sit-in, or a linking of arms. To write our representatives or a protest sign. To do what we must — because we must!
I recently wrote about following a breadcrumb trail of books to my inevitable rewilding. It started with Braiding Sweetgrass, meandered to Rooted, and found its way to author Charlotte McConaghy’s environmental fiction. The message was clear and constant: The Earth is in danger, and we have to stop looking for someone else to save it.
So, I did what I do. I thought about what was in my power to achieve. I tapped into my sense of personal agency and came up with a plan. I would steadily replace the lawn with more garden. I would plant native plants. I would make shelters for pollinators, provide water sources for tree frogs, and generally become a better friend and caretaker of the creatures who inhabit this world…
