There are chickens all over our yard, here in Hawaii. When we moved here years ago, there were none.

But when a Mexican family below us started keeping them, inevitable strays pecked and prodded their way up the hill. We now have dozens of chickens around.

Chickens can teach you where to find the treasure

When spring comes, hens show up with hungry chicks. The moms can be quite persistent.

They know darn well that humans are the ones dumping compost on the pile. They also know from people lunching on the lanai that crumbs will come. They know that beneath the bird feeder, gravity, plus people, results in bits of food all along the garden path. Chickens, despite rumors to the contrary, are not stupid. In fact, there are many, many lessons they can teach.

Life lessons from poultry to people

Chickens teach that you can look for an opportunity where those who come before you leave trails of crumbs. You don’t have to re-invent agriculture, the combine, the harvest, or distribution of corn. You just have to be there where experts in all these fields drop kernels of wisdom and supper.
