Nutritional Supplements Will Never Be The Same

Liposomes and the bold new future of nutrition

I used to think supplementation was important if you didn’t have a perfect diet, but I believed for many years that you could get everything you needed from food alone.

It makes sense right? I mean, after all, we’re animals like any other. If we can’t get all the nutrients we need from food, then what the heck were we doing 20,000 years ago when all we had was our environment?

What I didn’t know is that even when we decide to eat like our ancestors, and really dial in our nutrition, there are factors that still lead to nutrient deficiencies.

And primarily it’s that food now is not the same as food 20,000 years ago.

Farming leads to something called soil depletion, and soil depletion causes our food to contain fewer nutrients. There are other factors such as the use of soil-leaching pesticides that affect specific nutrients like magnesium, but the point is this: As shown in a paper by Donald Davis, foods today contain up to 40% less nutritional value than the same foods did in the 1950s.

Alas, a whopping 68% of Americans take dietary supplements, and for good reason.

Is it enough though?

Supplementation is great, but not all supplements are created equal. Dietary supplements are an unregulated industry, and the materials in low-quality supplements range from ineffective to outright dangerous.

Even with reputable brands, some supplements are easily absorbed by the body, and others are ineffective.

For example, glutathione is an anti-oxidant that our body creates, and is considered to be one of the most powerful materials for shutting down inflammation. However, supplemental glutathione is destroyed in the gut, and the alternative option is to get an IV, which can be both expensive and inconvenient.

This is where liposomal technology comes in.

Liposomal Delivery, The Future of Nutrition

Liposomal delivery involves wrapping nutrient molecules in a layer of lipids, and this is known as a liposome. Liposomes mimic the material our cell walls are made of, and liposomal delivery serves a two-fold purpose.

  1. Liposomal delivery protects nutrients from being destroyed in the gut by stomach acids
  2. Liposomal delivery increases nutrient absorption into our cells

Because liposomes are made of the same lipids as the walls of our body’s cells, they may even meld with our cell walls and repair as well as protect them.

Now, telling you this stuff is all fine and dandy, but how about some statistics? Thankfully, liposomal technology is backed by over 50,000 peer-reviewed studies.

In a randomized, placebo-controlled study published in NCBI, liposomal vitamin C raised blood plasma levels higher than that of normal oral vitamin C supplementation.

Also, remember glutathione? That powerful antioxidant our body makes but we cannot supplement with? Well, in another NCBI study, liposomal delivery of glutathione was shown to raise body stores of glutathione as well as improve markers of immune function

I cannot stress how great this is. Glutathione is one of the best antioxidants our body uses, and it is part and parcel to our body’s natural detoxification processes. Being able to supplement with it directly is a game changer.

There’s not a ton of research on nutritional liposomes, and I’ll get into why in just a second, but the data has been well established in the pharmaceutical industry that liposomal delivery is an effective means of getting materials into our cells and increasing absorption.

Here’s the thing, we’ve known about liposomes since the 1960s, but many of the most effective liposomal formulations have been under patent by drug companies. (part of why there’s less research for nutrition.)

However, in recent years, many of these patents have expired, and some of the best formulations are now available for use with dietary supplements.

This is where a company called Vasayo comes in. There are a small handful of companies leading the charge with Liposomal technology, but this one is special.

Vasayo & The Liposome Advantage

Few companies have had the foresight to run with liposomal technology, and even when they do, there is no guarantee of quality. I won’t name any names, but I am often surprised at the low standards of some supplements, even when representing major health names.

On the flip side, I am also surprised at times to find great products where I least expect them, and this is what happened with Vasayo.

Vasayo was founded in 2016 by Dallin and Karree Larsen. Many know Dallin as the man who founded one of the most successful health companies of all time: Monavie, which became the first health companies in the multi-level marketing space to do over $1 billion in sales using only the North American market.

Now, full-disclosure, Vasayo is also multi-level marketing (MLM) company, and I know for many people, MLM is a dirty word. For those of you who don’t know, MLMs do business by allowing customers to become affiliates, who then have an opportunity to make money by selling the company’s products.

Most people look down on MLMs due to the difficulty of making money as an affiliate, but for the consumer, these are still just companies offering products.

And the product is what I’m interested in.

If you’ve had a chance to look through my blog, you know I’ve researched a ton of different topics regarding health and fitness, and I have really high standards when it comes to supplements.

I don’t want there to be additives in my products or excess sugars. Furthermore, I care about having quality formulations of the nutrients that really matter, and I want to get my supplements from non-GMO sources.

Truth be told, this is usually hard to come by, but Vasayo hit all of these bases.

Furthermore, their prices are very competitive. Let’s just look at their core supplement as an example.

Vasayo vs. Competitors

Core by Vasayo is a liposomal multivitamin and superfood blend for $64.

Core includes

  • A Multi-vitamin blend of vitamin D, a B vitamin complex, vitamin C, essential nutrients like magnesium, selenium, iron, and chromium
  • Organic trace minerals: 72 essential trace minerals, 16 amino acids, and fulvic acid
  • A certified organic superfood blend including Alfalfa Leaf powder, Wheatgrass, Barley Grass, Lemon Juice powder, Gotu Kola powder, Kale powder, Astragalus powder, Spirulina powder, Bitter Melon powder, Oat Grass powder, Chlorella powder, Broccoli juice powder, Cabbage juice powder, Parsley juice powder
  • Berry Blend of Acai berry powder, Amla fruit powder, Goji berry powder, Pomegranate juice powder, Mangosteen super ORAC powder, Strawberry juice powder, Cranberry juice powder, Maqui berry juice powder, Jamun berry juice powder, Schisandra juice extract.
  • A digestive care blend including Protease (10,000 HUT, Amylase 10,000 SKB, Lipase 800LU, Cellulase 400CU), Probiotic strain of 2 billion cfu/g each of L. acidophilus, B. bifidus, L. casei, L. bulgaricus
  • An Omega Complex including 100% natural fish oil from salmon with a wide spectrum of beneficial components. Contains Omega 3, 6, 7, and 9, plus astaxanthin.

To put this in perspective, this $64 supplement covers 4 major components in optimal health: 1. Mineral and nutrient support with the multi-vitamin. 2. Gut health with BOTH a digestive enzyme blend (read about the benefits of digestive enzymes here) and a powerful, patented probiotic. 3. A powerful Omega blend of healthy fats. 4. Superfoods in both the forms of organic berries and powerful plants.

By comparison, the company Thorne, who I also love, offers their Multi-vitamin Elite with these ingredients for $62:

  • Extensive Multi-vitamin Blend Including Vitamin D, Vitamin K2, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, B Vitamin Complex, Chromium, Selenium, Copper, Magnesium, and other Essential Minerals
  • The Brain Nutrient Choline Citrate
  • Anti-inflammatories of Curcumin and Green Tea Phytosomes
  • Relora Adaptogen Blend for Adrenal Health.

Thorne’s mutli-vitamin is phenomenal and using it was a major influencer in helping me regain my health and stop the effects of chronic fatigue and anxiety. Thorne’s product has a few more vitamins than Vasayo’s in some, but unlike Vasayo, the thorne blend is not liposomal, meaning it has less absorbability, and does not include omegas, digestive enzymes, probiotics or a super food blend.

By comparison, you would also have to purchase Thorne’s Omega Plus for $37, their digestive enzyme for $40, their probiotic for another $40, and then you’d have to go find a worthy superfood blend, many of which are another $60 on your total.

All in all, this results in a shopping cart total of close to $250 to get everything that comes with Vasayo’s Core supplement. Don’t get me wrong, I fully support Thorne, and if you went that direction I’m sure you would be feeling amazing as well, but it gets expensive fast to make your own health stacks.
