Practical and Sustainable: Effective Strategies to Reduce Plastic Use
Ridding yourself of plastic or using less of it is hard, but not impossible.
“You go through more plastic than Dad and I do in a single month.”
For a long while my mom has been making this comment when I give her a bag filled with recyclables since our apartment doesn’t offer the service. This tends to happen at least once per month and for the most part, the bag is filled with plastic.
From sandwich containers to juice jugs over the course of the month, my roommate and I go through a tonne of plastic on a regular basis.
It’s been on my mind to try and cut back—buying fewer frozen pizzas, pre-made food items, and such—but I still find myself and my roommate filling up a big bag with plastic and cardboard month after month.
It bugs me slightly, especially these days, as I’m paying more attention to my health and what I put into my body. I know the dangers of plastic, but it feels like I can’t reasonably make the switch or use it less.
I can’t grow a garden in my apartment, and I won’t be able to monitor it that much if I make one in my parents' backyard.
