Spiritual Accountability is NOT a Ponzi scheme.
The treatment of God’s people has long been on my mind concerning spiritual accountability or spiritual parenthood. In many instances, it looks like a Ponzi scheme. A Ponzi scheme is a type of scam where a so-called businessman pays initial investors with funds from newer investors. In this scenario, a person pays into a leader and that leader pays into someone else…and so on.
One of my indications that we will have folks who operate as parental figures amongst us for those who need it is found in 1 Corinthians 4:15. The KJV states: "For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel." There is nothing wrong with the need or the term because we know that parenthood is the associated term for bringing people into maturity. Let us not make what we call the maturation process in the body about the semantics, but let us continue to focus on the goal, which is maturity. This concept is biblical and is mentioned as the purpose of the gifts mentioned in Ephesians:
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: (Ephesians 4:11–15).
However, I must tell everyone that if money is a REQUIREMENT to be associated with a spiritual parent or covering- *Imma* need you to run. Fast. This is a full stop.
Kingdom family, this is simply pimping at its finest. Spiritual witchcraft and manipulation. These “leaders” are not trusting God for finances, but are requiring folks to pay into their system. There are two main drivers for this. The first is that many do not honor, respect, and value the labor of love from leaders. The second issue is that many leaders believe that you have to make people honor and give, but that is simply untrue. Both have boiled down to trust and it’s hard to tell which one came first, much like the chicken or the egg. But, it is clear that it has to end with leaders. Consider this a clarion call to be the forerunner of maturity and leadership.
Jesus never told us to require payment of any kind to recoup for a lack of honor.
We have to teach and let the Holy Spirit guide. Teaching requires a point where folks have to “show their work” by doing the right and honorable thing…..or not. It is not the job of a parent or leader to choose the way, but to show the way. The Holy Spirit will do the rest. For those concerned about funding ministries, God will provide. Where He does not, then leaders have to do what they require of others- seek God and trust Him for provision, protecting and/or for redirection.
Sending someone a check is not a parenting relationship- that’s just being associated with a name. Jesus didn’t need for us to die in order to do this. This is cheapening God’s vast treasure for the sake of a dollar bill.
If we teach our children (natural and spiritual) HONOR, TRUE GIVING, GRACE, and LOVE as well as how to hear the HOLY SPIRIT for themselves.....the body could hear how to give appropriately.
Giving is important and necessary. However, we are called to give willingly. Charity always begins at home. Hear me clearly: If it comes down to your rent or other necessary bills versus a church payment- pay your rent. That doesn’t require a prayer vigil or counseling; use common sense. It is time out for this manipulative behavior. Bottom line, there is no biblical precedent for people MANDATING tithes, sowing, or any form of payment in exchange for spiritual accountability or spiritual parenting.
There is so much that you could be doing with your time, so I consider it an honor that you took the time to read this.
