The Lyrics of Christmas
The lyrics of many Christmas carols express the nativity story, but also point out our need for a Savior.
Consider these phrases from carols and Bible verses that speak of God’s love for us.
“…the hopes and fears of all the years are met in Thee tonight” from O Little Town of Bethlehem.
Compare it with 1 John 4:18:
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.”
“…God with man is now residing…” from Angels We Have Heard on High.
Compare it with John 1:14
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”
“…Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord at thy birth.” from Silent Night.
Compare it with 1 John 4:10:
“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”
“…Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!” from Hark! the Herald Angel Sing.
Compare it with 2 Corinthians 5:18:
“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ.”
“Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining Till he appear’d and the soul felt its worth.”…from O Holy Night.
Compare it with Ephesians 1: 4–5a:
“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ…”
As you listen to the lyrics of Christmas carols, I pray that you will be touched by the beauty of the message of hope.
