Despite what we think, hope is not a strategy.

Hope is something we all should have. It’s a great thing. Embrace it. But don’t make it your strategy.

Hope will only get you so far.

Great thoughts lead to a great life

Henry Ford is right when he coined: “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.”

Thoughts matter

Did you know that the human mind processes anywhere between 50,000 and 70,000 thoughts in a day? Lots of meditating occurring.

Zen, yoga, and Buddhism have practiced meditation for hundreds of years. Eastern religions have taught that meditation is to empty our minds. But is it?

Rick Warren, describes meditation this way:

“Meditation is focused thinking. It takes serious effort. You select a verse and reflect on it over and over in your mind…if you know how to worry, you already know how to meditate” (190).

Sam Storms, the lead pastor at Bridgeway Church in Oklahoma City, OK, wrote about Christian meditation by saying:

“To meditate properly our souls must reflect upon what our minds have ingested and our hearts must rejoice in what our souls have grasped,” he wrote. “We have meditated when we slowly read, prayerfully imbibe and humbly rely upon what God has revealed to us in his Word.

Filling Your Mind

In Joshua 1:8, God says to meditate on His word day and night. The psalmist says, “his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law, he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2). The Bible mentions meditate or meditation over 20 times.

When we learn to meditate, we learn how to choose our thoughts. We cannot resist every thought, but we can filter the best from the rest.

We must think about what we are thinking about

Negative thinking

Over 75% of all mental, physical, and biological illness evolves from bad thoughts. Did you know that the human mind processes between 50,000 and 70,000 thoughts a day?

Meditating on negative thoughts will never produce positive results. Scientists tell us that meditating on negative thoughts shift the DNA cellular structure in our bodies. This results in the cells restricting, tightening and becoming shorter. This fleshes out as negative feelings and toxic behaviors.

When we meditate on good things, scientists say; meditating on positive thoughts improves and repairs the DNA structure of our cells.

Dr. Caroline Leaf says:

When we speak words of faith oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin flow in your body and brain and you weaken traumatic thoughts, and neurons fire apart and rewire negative emotions to positive.

Wow! Do you see that words of faith rewire the brain and release endorphins that bring healing and wholeness?

Can we say this resembles spiritual brain surgery?

Well not quite, but it’s still remarkable.

Food is not the problem

It’s the ingredients stupid. Your life is similar. Sometimes you have the wrong ingredients infiltrating your mind. Or, you are using the wrong recipe.

There are countless recipes to build a great life

Words and Thoughts

Have you noticed your thoughts follow your words? Start counting to ten. One. Two. Was your next thought three? Yes.

What does that prove? It proves that you can change your thoughts by changing the words of your mouth.

We think in words. Can we have thoughts without words? Not sure?

But, if we did not know what a cat was, how could we think thoughts about a cat? Get it?

Without defining words there is no cognitive reference to thought.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:8–9, NKJV)

Notice God tells Joshua; This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth. God did not say; this book of the law shall not depart from your “mind.”

He said; Your mouth. Why?

Because your words control your thoughts. What? Yes.

We cannot control our minds by telling our minds to be quiet. When we talk to our mind whatever we say controls what the mind thinks.

Telling your mind to stop, only keeps it thinking, because it processes your words into a thought.

Michael Michalto with Creative Thinking wrote:

Toyota asked employees for ideas on how they could become more productive. They received few suggestions. They reworded the question to: “In what ways might I make my job easier?” It inundated them with ideas. Even tiny changes in words can lead to unpredictable, cataclysmic results.

So, our thoughts are controlled from the words we speak.

“Oh, the joys of those who do not follow evil men’s advice, who do not hang around with sinners, scoffing at the things of God. But they delight in doing everything God wants them to, and day and night are always meditating on his laws and thinking about ways to follow him more closely. They are like trees along a riverbank bearing luscious fruit each season without fail. Their leaves shall never wither, and all they do shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:1–4, LB)

Notice the words “they are always meditating.”

Notice the results:

  • they (follow God)
  • they become (like trees)
  • they bear fruit (change)
  • they never wither (constant nourishment)
  • they shall prosper (from meditation)

Words create images and images create thoughts.

Thoughts create the life we live.

Lao Tzu said:

“Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”

The quote from Lao Tzu ends with destiny but begins with words.

And so does your life.

You change your thoughts by changing your words.
