I bet that if you’ve been in a writing slump for awhile, you haven’t thought of trying just this one thing that could make all the difference in your writing.

It’s a simple and easy idea — expand your boundaries.

*Write in a variety of settings*

Wherever you may be throughout your busy day, pull out your phone in a secret moment and open the Medium app. Stay grounded in your unique setting, while pulling energy from it to add to your writing. If you are a tied-to-the-keyboard kind of writer, get creative. The library, a computer lab at a university, or charge up your big clunky laptop and take it with you somewhere outdoors (where you can find free wi-fi). A coffee shop, or McDonald’s even? No matter the setting, it will inspire feelings that are different or new, it will reflect your view on life somehow, and it will add something distinct to your writing.

The goal of this lesson is to bust out of old habits so that your creative juices get inspired to flow again. By practicing writing in a variety of settings, instead of your plain old office (where you sit day in and day out), you will experience new stimuli to help you generate new ideas. In different places, your writing may take on a different tone because of the unique way that place affects your mood. Embrace these changes!

If you practice writing in various settings, your writing, as a whole, will become richer. New ideas will pop up. Everything from your life will be woven together into much more inspiring writing.

You may experience more or less anxiety in a particular place, which may affect your editing/revision decisions.

Maybe you will feel confident enough to submit that post you’ve been sitting on for awhile.

So get going guys! If you are in a slump and haven’t tried this yet, what’s stopping you? Grab a notebook if you have to! Sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves when we feel like we are sinking, that we fail to recognize easy ways to help ourselves. It’s the simple things, guys.

Today, I challenge you to write somewhere new. If you choose to accept this challenge, let us know in the comments how writing somewhere different affected your writing, or your slump. I am going to write at the library today, while my kiddos play. Can’t wait to hear from you!
