What a Turkish Soap Opera Says About My Marriage
We are on episode 55, and it’s not even in English, but love transcends language.
“Are you ready to watch an episode?” My husband grabs the remote and I settle on the couch with a cup of tea. He turns to Black Money Love, a Turkish series streaming on Netflix.
When we finish watching one episode, he says, “One more?”
I can’t resist. The last episode ended with a cliffhanger, and I need to know what happens next.
I’m not sure exactly how we got hooked on a show in Turkish that revolves around an unfolding romance between a driven, handsome, middle-class cop and a beautiful, strong-willed, rich businesswoman. My husband usually watches sports or news, and I usually watch scary dramas or documentaries.
But here we are, binge-watching, and because it’s in Turkish, we are reading subtitles. The subtitles make it impossible to do anything else at the same time. No working on the computer or puttering around the kitchen. If our attention isn’t riveted on the TV, we miss what’s happening.
And a lot is happening: money laundering, murder, illegal organ harvesting, abortion, corrupt cops, mystery, intrigue, and most of all, romance.
