Why Avoiding Family Members Who Voted for Trump is Poor Advice
Some Harris supporters are urging people to skip Thanksgiving because of politics, but there’s a better approach.
The 20-pound turkey I heave from the car to the freezer might not be big enough. I do a quick Google search and discover that 24 pounds would be more suitable. Too late now, I think, eyeing the bird. Let them eat ham if we run out of turkey.
The size of the turkey, the number of side dishes I’ll need, and where everyone will sleep are considerations that swirl through my mind as I prepare for Thanksgiving. In addition to children, spouses, and grandchildren, three of my 12 grandkids have asked if their boyfriend/girlfriend can come. Naturally, I say yes. This brings my total to 22.
It’s a diverse crowd, representing different ages, races, ethnicities, and political affiliations. We are split down the middle between those who voted for Harris and those who voted for Trump, with both sides passionate about their beliefs.
But more important than the opinions that divide are the bonds that bind us. Not one person in this crowd would consider ditching Thanksgiving because of politics, because politics come and go, but families are forever. With all our flaws and failings, we are a…
