Why My 19-Year-Old Granddaughter Quit Her Job After 3 Months
She said she couldn’t take it anymore
My granddaughter decided to take a gap year after graduating from high school, but things didn’t turn out the way she expected.
At first, she traveled for a couple of weeks, then settled down at home to help with three younger siblings. When summer break was over and her siblings returned to school, she was excited to land a job teaching art in an after-school program.
For three weeks, she had fun teaching elementary and middle school students. Creative by nature and great with kids, she planned activities and provided a lot of her own art supplies. The hour-long commute and low pay didn’t bother her, because she figured she was gaining experience. She had previously taught art as a private tutor, and now she was able to share her passion with an entire classroom.
Initially, she told me stories of their art projects and the cute things her students said. But over time, her stories began to change. One day, she mentioned that some high school kids got in a fight in the cafeteria. She herded the frightened younger children into a corner, where they waited several minutes for somebody to intervene and stop the fight.
