For a June 5, 2013, benefit in Manhattan, Willie Nelson came to town. It was a fundraiser for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. This remarkable nonprofit provides care for U.S. military personnel who suffer from the terrible—but invisible—wounds of war. The injuries that affect the brain.

The band, “Willie Nelson and Family,’ traveled up from Texas in their big touring bus. The NYPD had set out some traffic cones on East 52nd Street near Park Avenue. It’s a busy cross street, not a place that generally welcomes huge parked vehicles.

Late in the afternoon Willie’s bus arrived and pulled into its reserved spot. This was right at the door of the Four Seasons Restaurant. (By day, an elite hangout for the movers and shakers of media, real estate, law, and politics.)

That evening the small dinner concert took place inside the restaurant. It must have seemed a peculiar (and cozy) setting for Willie. After all, he often performs in stadiums for tens of thousands.
