You Aren’t Out Of Things To Write — You’re Just Not Honest Enough

Being honest is your only job as a creative.

We were taking the usual daily walk in the park near our apartment and talking.

“It seems as if I am running out of material,” I said.

She looked at me seriously and thought for a bit.

Then she said, “Yeah yeah. Probably because of the pandemic. Our lives used to be fun, and now all we do is sit at home and work. No wonder you’re running out of inspiration.”

As we’re all sitting at home, it makes sense to double down on our art.

But can you create art — whether it’s a book, a blog post, or a piece of painting — in the absence of external inspiration?

I don’t know.

I’ve heard the argument that writers need to keep their full-time jobs to have something to write about. I even (partially) agree with it.

If all you do is sit in your house all day long and write, it makes sense that at some point you’ll run out of things to talk about.

Writers like Dickens and Kafka had full-time jobs all their lives. But then, there are numerous examples of writers like Hemingway and others, that were entirely consumed by their art.
