How to rewrite your own story
“Why not try something else?” I suggested.
He looked at me as if I’d turned into the chicken from Moana.
”But this is who I am.” he said.
Jeremy was stuck physically and mentally. He was in a job he hated, a relationship he felt he’d outgrown, and he was fast becoming a couch potato. He came to see me for help because he was so bogged down with old, unhelpful thoughts that he couldn’t see a way out.
“Tell me about your life ten years ago,” I asked.
Jeremy brightened. “Ten years ago, I was fit. I took a gap here after university, and I was travelling around with my girlfriend, now my wife. We had crazy fun.” His light dimmed again.
“Is that who you are?”
“No,” he said, shaking his head, “that was me then, but it’s not who I am now.”
“If that’s true,” I said, “then it must be true that you’ve changed, and so it must be true that you can change again.”
Jeremy looked confused. “Well, I guess” he muttered.
Maybe it’s time to reinvent yourself.
