‘Your Friends at Medium’ are Now My Friends
How To Join the Medium Partner Program If Your Country isn’t Stripe Supported.
In case you are wondering why we were enemies or frenemies, wonder no more;
'Your Friends at Medium' are unfriendly.
I have been wanting to read all of Shannon Ashley's posts and all Tom Kuegler's post and be in the loop. It feels like…
But this did not happen without some intervention from a friend Agnes Louis. She stumbled on the above article thanks to Nicole Akers who listed it in one of her Medium articles and she suggested on what to do if I wanted to be on the Medium Partner Program. Via email, she gave me her hacks which I am going to share in this article.
Stripe Supported Countries
While Stripe might have told you to wait until your country is supported, I’m sure your itch to write, writing goals and your bank account are less patient. The MPP program is not a get rich quick program, it can buy you a latte at your local coffee shop or writing materials and even pay your rent if you’re consistent and put in the work. A case example is Shannon Ashley’s success. I’m not sure if it has paid her rent but her success on Medium is evident as well as her work ethic.
Celine Lai wrote an article about Medium Success. If it can pay back her $5 premium ($7 as she’s in Australia), she’s okay. That means a goal of $2 a week. This may seem low but it makes sense. If the Medium Partner Program can pay itself forward with some dollars on the side, that’s success. I’d like to adopt her version of success. It deflates the pressure of my writing and expectation while giving me room to write, fail, experiment and succeed.
Stripe is currently supported in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France (Metropolitan France only), Germany, Hong-Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States.
Seriously Stripe? Not even South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda Probably? Really? No?
Hacking The System and Reading Between The Lines
Or the fine print.
According to Stripe, here are the ways in which people and business owners can use the platform. Their account types are standard, express and custom. The types offer different services to users where one can even code their Stripe Account the way they want it when they choose custom. Apart from this, Stripe has products such as Stripe Atlas which works for most companies not based in the US and would probably work for any writer not based in the US. The downside of this, however, is the amount you have to pay. I believe $500 and form a C Corporation in Delaware, though I stand corrected as it’s been a while since I last checked.
Stripe also has Stripe Radar to check fraud especially in eCommerce sites, and Sigma, for all your business data.
I am not a tech person and neither are most of the writers in this platform. So I will quickly show you what’s important to you and I as writers in the wider African, Carribean, Asia and Pacific countries. Which is how to have a Stripe Account.
Stripe For Medium Writers
Stripe Express is only available for US residents and can only be used for Medium while Stripe Standard can be used multiple services (in the 23 supported countries) and for Medium. This is the account that we’re going to focus on.
Setting up payments with Stripe
To enroll in the Medium Partner Program and receive payments from Medium, you will need a Stripe account. Setting up…
However, you, my friend are not in a Stripe supported country but have a lot of aunts, cousins or siblings in Stripe supported countries. It’s time to ask for a favour. I advise you to ask people who you know are trustworthy and won’t run away with your money.
Create A Stripe Account With Their Bank Account Details
As I said, this has to be someone you trust. Talk about it and figure out how it’s going to work.
You can either:
Create a Stripe Account and add their bank details to activate. In case either you or the bank account owner wants to change ownership of the account, Stripe allows it but it’s procedural.
Use their Stripe Account and have shared logins. I prefer creating my own Stripe Account as I have private logins. This is because you can have multiple Stripe accounts for multiple businesses. But at the end of the day, the funds will be released to the bank account added and then they’ll send the money to you.
Create an LLC ie Stripe Atlas. I’m not well informed on this topic and it might include physically going to the US and opening a bank account. Again, I stand corrected on this. However, here’s a Youtube Video for anyone interested.
I hope this article will help you join the program or make a decision with regards to payment gateways. If there’s something I have missed that could be of use to the readers, feel free to add in the comments.
