Colorado inmate sentenced for death threats against Obama
DENVER (AP) — A Colorado inmate charged with writing letters threatening to kill former President Barack Obama by blowing up the White House and to shoot a federal judge has been given a nearly four-year prison sentence.
The Denver Post reports 27-year-old Michael Francis Clapper was sentenced Monday to 46 months in prison.
Court documents say he wrote the threatening letters to federal court in Denver in 2015 while serving time in the Colorado State Penitentiary for arson, auto theft and menacing convictions.
When questioned about the letters by a U.S. Secret Service agent, Clapper said he intended to carry out the threats following his release from prison.
His attorney unsuccessfully argued in court Monday for a shorter prison term, saying Clapper is mentally ill and had an abusive childhood.
