Colorado Parks and Wildlife is creating the Colorado Trail System, which will compile every trail in the state into one map. Repeat: All of the trails!

As of the beginning of June, more than 1,500 miles of Colorado trails have been mapped all over the state, and that’s just a portion of what’s to be done. The map includes hiking and motorized trails that cover the mountains and plains. Otero County has more than 380 miles of trails mapped.

In the coming months, Colorado Parks and Wildlife will reach out to every local government in the state to offer them the ability to integrate their trail information into the map. The current map is a beta, and a full launch is expected in Fall 2017.

The mapping is a key component of Gov. John Hickenlooper’s Colorado the Beautiful initiative.

“This comprehensive mapping project is an important way to support Colorado’s rapidly growing demand for outdoor recreation opportunities,” Hickenlooper said in a statement regarding the beta map.

“Assembling trail information that traditionally exists in dozens or hundreds of other places in one site will make it far easier for Coloradans to discover trail options often just a short distance from their homes.”
