Meet Janie Guzman. She’s a Handwriting Artist who joined the team in September 2017.

By day, she’s a senior designer at a food-tech startup in New York. At night and really early in the morning, she’s writing your card messages.

Her creativity doesn’t end there. She’s also designed two cards for Punkpost: “You’re the Abbi to My Ilana” and “I Love You, I Miss You, I Hate Everyone Else.” Word around the office is that she also has a Halloween card coming out soon.

When she’s not creating, she’s hanging out with her fiancé, Mikey. The cute couple is getting married in October after 12 years together. Janie is originally from Chicago, so she also enjoys exploring New York to find the best pizza — even though Chicago will also be her home.

Now that you know a little about her, and you’ve seen her card in our shop, let’s look at the handwritten designs she created for customers this past year.

Celebratory flowers: A sweet thank you gets one of Janie’s go-to doodles: florals. How pretty is this flower patch?!?

Magical birthday: Our customers love unicorns, so it’s a good thing Janie is so great at them! Add a few balloons and cupcakes, and this is the most delightful birthday card.

Wonderful card: Tell Janie to give you a Wonder Woman theme, and she’ll deliver. It’s got a lasso, stars and lots of motivational sentiment.

Beary cute: Janie also excels at cute animals, whether plushy or real.

Fave card: “ I like making the cards feel like they are mini post cards so I enjoy big graphics that are bold and fun.”

Fast facts about Janie:

  • Location: Queens, New York
  • When she’s not writing cards: She’s searching for delicious pizza and pies, pumping iron at the gym, taking art classes, and exploring New York with her fiancé, Mikey.
  • Writing background: “I have always love creating something from nothing.” Her artistic talents include drawing, painting, making paper fans, lettering and more. When she was little, she loved watching Bob Ross and sculpted with Play-Doh. “It made me happy and proud to create something I could show my family!”
  • Go-to doodles: Flowers and cute animals.
  • Favorite writing utensil: Tombow pens and markers.
  • Favorite colors to use in cards: Blue, gray and pink.
  • Favorite stamps: The scratch-and-sniff Frozen Treats stamps.
  • Favorite cards to write: Love cards.
  • Workspace: At her desk at home where all her markers happily live.
  • Favorite background noise: Reruns of Friends and the Beach Boys.
  • Favorite time to write: Either before work at 6 a.m. or after work at 10 p.m.
  • Writing process: First, she reads the message to brainstorm the layout. Next, she lightly pencils a design or just goes for it. Then, she embellishes the words with doodles and graphics, if that’s what they requested. Lastly, she comes back to give the lettering extra details.
  • Cards written (so far): 800+
  • Skill building: She does a Google image search for what she wants to draw and references the different photos she likes as she goes.
  • Inspiration: Fellow Punkpost artists. Their talent is truly amazing and I feel like I have a personal library of styles and doodles to draw inspiration. (Check out our team page to meet the crew and follow their lettering accounts.)
