He screamed in agony, wishing for death as we want for life. And then, one by one, the sounds, memories, and pain began to fade, and he knew — this was the moment of departure, the separation from life itself, and the crossing into either eternity or oblivion. Would it truly be a farewell? Slowly, the hospital filled with journalists, doctors, and strangers he had never seen before, along with others who had been closer to his heart than the physician now standing over the defibrillator. With the last electric pulse, the doctor stepped out before the gathering, adjusting his coat and smoothing his hair in the glow of television cameras, and said, “We did everything we could, but the patient has passed away…”
