It was Sunday, the day after prom, and the day Emily, Zach, and Aunt Maureen were going to talk to his father. The crew didn’t do anything special last night since they all blew off the prom and just watched a movie over at Danny’s house. They all decided to be there when Zach and Emily made their big announcement to the alpha. Jacob and Danny both said they’d back him up with the whole bonding and would confess also.

“Does he suspect anything?” Emily’s anxiety level was being pushed to its upper limits the closer Zach drove to his house, where his dad was waiting.

Zach shook his head and looked in the rearview mirror to make sure Aunt Maureen was still behind him. He saw the Escalade keeping up and was surprised with her ability to drive at a speed over forty on these winding bends with that big of a vehicle. “He thinks everyone is coming over for formal introductions.”

“Will anyone else be there? You know, like other pack members?” Emily noticed they were on the last bend until they pulled into the long driveway.

“Just Jacob and Danny.” The car swung off the main road and onto the dirt path that led to the house. “Em, it’ll be okay. Remember, Alex didn’t see anything happening with this meeting and you’re still in the vision holding a baby.” The more he talked and thought about becoming a dad right now, the more nervous he became.

“Yeah, I know. But what if the vision isn’t always right?”

“Em, we’re all there to protect you.” He reached over and gripped her hand tightly. “Nothing’s going to happen.” The Mustang pulled into its usual spot and Aunt Maureen’s car pulled in next to it.

“Wow, this is pretty nice back here.” Aunt Maureen took in the scenery as they stood in the middle of the parking lot. “Is this all yours?” She motioned toward the vast amount of wooded area that circled the entire house.

“Well, my dad owns it but the entire pack sort of claims it as their own grounds when they’re all here.” Zach motioned for them to all start walking toward the front door.

“It’s just a lot of property to be watching.” Aunt Maureen looked around her once again. She hoped that Zach would pick up on her reference about watching.

“We have trackers out every day.” He hopefully put her mind at ease that Emily was safe here and vamps wouldn’t be able to get in.

The front door swung open. “Hey, you’re all here.” Jacob opened the entrance wider so that everyone could come in.

“Jacob, this is Emily’s aunt, Maureen.” Zach gave a formal introduction. Jacob looked like he was being cautious around her, while Aunt Maureen stuck her hand out for a handshake.

“It’s good to finally meet you, Jacob. I’ve heard many things about you.” Aunt Maureen wasn’t going to let his demeanor of being a shifter scare her into submission. She worked daily with clients who could suck her dry in minutes—no worries here in a house full of wolves.

“Uh, yeah. You too.” Jacob lightly shook her hand, then dropped it as he heard a commotion coming down the hall.

“Yay, you finally made it.” Madison ran over to Emily and gave her a small squeeze.

Alex and Danny were right behind her and gave a small wave to everyone.

“Settle down.” Madison turned around toward Jacob and pointed her finger at him. She felt his alpha personality trying to make a breakout and knew it wouldn’t be a good scene right now if that were to happen. He glared at her for singling him out, but nodded and backed away. “We’re all here to help.” She kissed him lightly on the lips, which seemed to break the tension.

“Where’s Dad?” Zach picked up Emily’s hand and started walking back toward the living room. He could already sense where his father was so there was no need for Jacob to answer. They all followed behind Zach and Emily, each uncertain as to how this meeting would turn out.

“Zachary.” Derek acknowledged his son when he and his small little pack behind him finally came into the room. Being an alpha he could sense all of their anxiety and knew this wasn’t going to be a normal meet and greet.

“Dad.” Zach returned the greeting and pulled Emily just a bit closer. “This is Emily. And we’re…um…she’s my mate.”

Derek was taken aback by his son’s bold statement, especially in front of the others and her aunt. He nodded and looked at the others’ expressions. They didn’t seem to be bothered by what Zach had claimed, including the aunt. “I’m assuming they all know.” He stared directly at Zach with the glower of an alpha demanding answers.

Zach knew this wasn’t the time to cower away, even if it was his father and alpha directing the order. “Yes. They all know who and what we are.”

“Well then.” Derek went and stood in front of the fireplace, motioning for the others to take a seat. “Then you need to explain to me who and what they are.”

Zach waited until everyone had found a seat. It seemed the girls were settled next to their mates just in case this all got ugly. He looked over at Jacob, who nodded for him to begin. “Well,” he turned his attention back toward his father, “this is Emily,” he motioned toward his mate beside him, “and that’s Emily’s aunt, Maureen.” Zach pointed to the person seated on the chair that was in between his dad and Emily.

Derek nodded to both women, then focused back on Zach. “And who are they?” He didn’t want to play this game that his son seemed intent on playing. He wanted to know about these women and he wanted to know now.

“Okay.” Aunt Maureen felt the tension rising in the room. She stood up and decided to help the youngsters out. “I’m Maureen Beauford and this is,” she pointed over to Emily still pressed up against Zach like she felt threatened, “she’s Emily Beauford, my niece.”

Zach’s father was impressed with this small little lady who took a stance, knowing who and what he was. “And where are Emily’s,” he glanced over at the girl who seemed to be glued to Zach’s side, “parents?”

“Well, her mother, my sister,” Aunt Maureen began her explanation, “died right after childbirth.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.” Derek tried to be as sympathetic as he could, but right now his stress level was being tested by the stalling of the group. “And her father?”

“I think I need Zach and Emily to explain a few things to you first before we tackle that answer.” Aunt Maureen went over and stood behind the sofa that Zach and Emily were seated on. She put and hand on each of their shoulders and squeezed gently, trying to encourage them to do what needed to be done.

“Zachary, I don’t have time for all this nonsense. Tell me what needs to be said without all the game playing.” Derek used his alpha influence to get his point across to his son.

“Okay.” Zach sensed his father’s growing irritation with what was going on here. “Emily’s pregnant and it’s my baby.” He got the first part of the issue out, now he had to wait for his father’s response.

Derek looked over the small girl seated on the sofa. She looked petrified of his stare and quickly looked away. He looked back at his son, who stood his ground when Derek glared at him with the look that only an alpha could do. “And you know this how?”

“Em took a pregnancy test on Friday and it came back positive.” Zach wondered what other type of information his father would need. “Her aunt was there.” Zach just wanted to clarify that another adult was there when it was performed.

Derek glanced at the woman standing behind Zach and Emily, who nodded that this was true. “Well, you still haven’t told me who her father is.” His focus was now back on his middle son.

“Another thing is…” Zach needed to get out about the bonding between him and Emily. He only hoped that Jacob and Danny would follow through on their intentions of it being known about Madison and Alex also. His father waved his hand for him to continue talking. “Um, Emily and I went against pack rules and we’ve bonded.” He felt the rage and power of the alpha even before he spoke.

“You did what?” Derek couldn’t believe that his son would defy all that was taught to him since he was a small child. “You know what this means, right?” He knew he’d have to tell the elders and that might warrant Zach being banned from the pack.

“Well.” Jacob stood up and interrupted before his father had a chance to say anything else. “I just wanted to make it known that Madison,” he motioned back to Madison, who was still seated on the chair they had shared, “and I are mates and we’ve also bonded.” This earned him a look of shock and disgrace from his dad.

“If they get into trouble, then I’ll have to also.” Danny stood and took off his shirt to show that tattooed marking that only those bonded as mates achieved when the complete rite was done fully. “Alex has the same marking too.” He put his shirt back on and went to stand behind the chair that she was seated on.

Derek let out a large sigh and rubbed his hands over his face in frustration, then looked at all the people who were waiting for him to make some kind of dramatic speech about the current situation. “Before I decide what to do, I need to know who these girls are.” He looked at Madison first. “I’ve seen you before with Zach, but how did you end up being Jacob’s mate?”

“We — ” Jacob started to answer for Madison, but was stopped short by his father’s hand being held up.

He glared at Jacob about his outburst, then looked back over at Madison. “I asked the girl.” Derek noticed the fear in her eyes with the way she was looking at him. This was the response that he needed to get the truth from her and be able to detect if she was lying.

“Um, Jacob and I discovered we were mates the first time we kissed.” She looked over at her mate and smiled. “We tried to deny it, but the connection between us was too strong.” Madison tried to avoid getting too worked up by the intense stare that Jacob’s father was emitting. “The bonding was something that just happened the first time we…uh…well when we…” She didn’t want to say they had sex, even though it was probably pretty evident that they had.

“The first time we had sex.” Jacob interceded for his mate. He knew she hated to talk to other people about them having sex. His father shot him another dirty look for interrupting, but he just looked away and rubbed Madison’s shoulders, then nodded for her to continue.

“Well,” Madison continued, “after you know. It seemed Jacob and I had bitten each other and drew blood. So see, it wasn’t like we planned for this to happen with the whole bonding, it was just something that happened naturally.” Madison looked around at Emily and Alex. They were both nodding their heads like they understood exactly what she was talking about. It was like something happened that they had no control over.

“That still doesn’t excuse the fact that my son disobeyed rules that had been instilled for generations.” He rubbed his hand over his face, trying to regain his line of thought. “You still haven’t answered the questions of who your parents are and what you consider yourself.” Derek stared directly at Madison once again.

“My mother is Aubrey Cloyce. But she made me keep my father’s last name of Benet.” Madison stopped talking as Jacob’s father held his hand up.

“You’re from the line of Townes. You’re a witch.” Derek was shocked by this news but tried to hold his composure. This line of witches, or enchantresses as they wished to be called nowadays, had been around since the Salem witch trials of the late 1600s.

Madison shrugged. “I guess so. My gram’s last name is Towne, as she kept her maiden name.”

Derek now had to find out if the other two held similar rankings within the supernatural world. He looked away from Madison and over to Alex. “Next.” He waved his hand for her to begin her story. He was quite intrigued by how well these girls were holding their own against his alpha power. Not only was he surprised by the ancestry, but this was the first time that he’d ever heard of such talk of not being able to control the need to bond, especially with the first time of having sexual relations.

Alex took a deep breath and tried not to let the intimidating stare of the alpha sway her. Danny’s hand on her shoulder brought the comfort that she needed at that time. “I was adopted, so I’m not sure of who my mother is. My parents told me that my biological father’s last name was Dylan.”

“That’s the same last name as Rose.” Derek looked at Zach and Jacob, who nodded their heads in agreement with his statement. “And your mother?” His attention was back on Alex and these revelations that just kept getting more bizarre as they were told.

“Her last name was Cayce, that’s all I know.” Alex felt lost as she didn’t even know who she belonged to or who she came from. Danny kissed her softly on the cheek and drew her closer to him. His wolf felt the sadness that was radiating off their mate and wanted to console her and let her know that he would always be there for her.

“You’re a descendant of Edgar Cayce,” Derek spoke this more of a realization than of a question for the girl.

“I don’t know. I have my parents’ last name of Remsey.” Alex would always consider herself their daughter, even though she was adopted. “I don’t know who or what my biological parents were.”

“Your mother was a great seer.” Derek was astounded once again at the hierarchy of this young woman. “As for your father, he may well have been the same. Rose’s last name was Dylan, and she was very powerful. Meaning she came from a long line of ancestors that were of the same nature.” Derek crossed his arms over his chest. “Tell me, young Alex, have you had any visualizations yet?” He could tell from her expression that she had. “What were they?” he asked before she even had time to answer the first part of the question.

“Do we have to make her go through this right now?” Danny knew he was challenging his alpha in responding to Alex, but she was his mate and he knew how stressed she became when having these visions.

Alex squeezed Danny’s hand, letting him know that she was all right. “I know that you’re not going to hurt Emily or the baby.”

“And why would I think about hurting Emily or the future alpha that she may be carrying?” Derek’s gaze was now on his middle son and the one who he claimed to be his bonded partner.

“Now, before Emily speaks…” Aunt Maureen stepped in between her niece and the one who had the capability of killing her with one slash of a claw or bite with his strong teeth. “She never knew about any of this until her past birthday when she turned eighteen.”

“Aunt Maureen.” Emily decided she needed to tell Zach’s father what he wanted and needed to know. “I have to tell him, it’s the only way.” Emily felt Zach squeeze her hand and knew that she had his support even if things didn’t go the way they hoped. “Mr. Lovell, Zach tried to fight this, but you of all people should know how strong the ties are that bound bonded mates. I never knew of my mother or my father until I turned eighteen in December.” Emily watched as Zach’s father waved his hand with impatience for her to hurry up on her story. “Okay, you want to know.” Emily was growing tired of his inability to wait for her to tell him her way, so she figured she might as well put everything out there on the table instead of trying to sugar-coat all of it. “My father is Orfeo. Yes, the one that you’ve been searching for. And I am the offspring that your pack has pledged to kill without any questions asked.” Emily took a step back and looked around at everyone and hoped that she still had their support even though she just bluntly spoke rudely to their alpha. The open mouths of shock at her performance outweighed the hostility she expected.

Aunt Maureen took a step forward as she confronted Zach’s father before he had a chance to retaliate. “Now, before you start — ” Her comment was halted as Derek’s hand went up and a loud grumble vibrated through the room. The looks on the three boys’ faces indicated now wasn’t a good time for her to show any woman power. Aunt Maureen stepped back and retook her place beside Emily.

“Now, it is my turn to speak.” Derek’s tone was loud, demanding, and intimidating, much like that of an alpha and not so much as a father figure. His glare was on Emily and his middle son. “I don’t know how, why, or if it’s a remote possibility that you two can be mates.” He shook his head and looked at the ground for a few seconds, then met with Zach’s returned stare. “Are you sure?” He knew that his son would know what he was inquiring about. The wolf would always lead them in the right direction and never be unsure of their mate. Zach nodded his head once and intertwined his fingers with Emily’s. He had a feeling this situation was turning out much different than what they’d expected.

“So, what are you going to do?” Jacob was tired of waiting for his father’s resolution to the problem. It was obvious he wasn’t going to kill Emily. Well, at least not right now. He knew all the hidden secrets, now it was time to find out what he planned on doing to them.

The alpha’s stare turned into a scowl as he looked over at his outspoken youngest son. “I’m going to speak to the elders of the pack concerning this situation.” He made his move to exit the room, but then turned around and faced the group who was watching him depart. “I want all of you to stay here until I return.” He didn’t wait for any response as his demand was expected to be followed.
