Netflix won’t be at Cannes this year which has sparked an argument about whether the theatrical release has relevance today. I would argue that it still does for a number of reasons:

1. The cinematic experience is still the best way to consume movies. By yourself or with friends, nothing beats watching a movie in a dark, distraction-free room

2) It’s better for filmmakers (especially newbies!) to do the red carpet, get interviewed and promote their film. Theatrical releases provide the necessary “event” that make people go and talk about something at the same time. A must have for new and original content

3) Producers and financiers would have no ability to make those big wins which enable them to fund the development cycle and fund other films. Conversely, this means there won’t be a box office bomb either. This means that we could see the industry stabilising with films becoming more like paid TV

4) The two actually need each other, theatrical to kick start the film and streaming to keep it alive for years to come.

What do you think?
