Lindsey Graham: Candidate Explainer

The DL On Senator Graham

A southern gentleman from South Carolina with humble roots, Senator Lindsey Graham is the most recent Republican presidential hopeful. With 33 years of military service and 12 years in the United States Senate under his belt, it’s no wonder that the Graham Presidential Campaign is using the hashtag #ReadyForCommand.

Key Points on Graham’s Resume

In addition to currently serving his 12th consecutive year as a Senator for the state of South Carolina, Graham previously represented his state as a Congressman in 1994. Before getting into government, Graham served in the United States Air Force from 1984 to 1995, including being on active duty, as well as serving six and a half years as a an Air Force lawyer and ultimately earning the rank of Colonel. He continues his military involvement in the Air Force Reserves, bringing his total military service to 33 years, so you can be sure his campaign will be relying heavily on his military record.

Why People Love Him

Graham is pushing for an even stronger national defense program, and has remained focussed during his time in Senate on national security. This comes at a time where the threat from international terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda and ISIS is shaking the world one attack at a time, and his dedication to preserving American values aren’t going unnoticed.

Another reason to like Graham is that he is one of the few Republican Senators that recognizes that global warming is in fact happening, and joins another Republican nominee George Pataki in recognizing that we need to develop energy independence. In terms of foreign policy, he is a staunch supporter of Israel, and has repeatedly opposed a nuclear deal with Iran, and issue that is sure to be a hot topic this election.

Why People Love to Hate Him

Sticking to his traditional values, Graham has been an open supporter of a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, believing gay marriage should be banned on a national level, and even claims we are losing the morals of our country. That’s probably not going to go over so well with certain voters.

He also been the author of numerous bills to defund and repeal The Affordable Care Act, better known as ObamaCare, and strongly believes this healthcare act is damaging our economy- leaving a lot of people wondering what, if any, alternative he will offer.

Additionally, he voted against the DREAM Act which would have allowed minors living in the United States illegally to stay while simultaneously bulking up border security. While considered somewhat of a moderate Republican on the issue because he voted for a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants who meet certain requirements, he’s equally criticized for stating that these requirements should include learning english, which is easier said than done for the thousands of illegal immigrants in the U.S.
