Both these guys are arch-Machiavellian/Thucydidean/Nitzscheans: power is all that matters, and they understand the utility of propaganda/consent-manufacturing, aka spin, aka the political Art of the Deal/Con.

Trump, unlike normal cynical politicos, say, Nixon and the Clintons, has a need not only to operate through fear, but also through the humiliation of anyone who ever dares to be anything but a *-licking sycophant.

The stronger the target, the deeper the debasement.

This latest dunking on Bill Barr … who was operating as a behind-the-DC-scenes semi-retired Elder Statesman prior to Rome pushing him into the AG’s chair via Leonard Leo and Pat Cipollone to save Trump from Mueller, in order to save the SCOTUS seats … is more than mockery.
