Why Purple? | Artwork by Monica Pereira

While sexual and physical abuse of children in schools is well-researched and documented, the harm done by emotional abuse on psychological functioning is often neglected.

We, at Purple Speaks, hail from different walks of life and professional backgrounds. Conversations about similar shared experiences of emotional abuse brought us together. As we continued to swap stories we realized that these patterns of abuse, that we had witnessed or experienced during our academic journey, were not limited to one school or geography. We also saw a gap in terms of the presence of narratives in this space and realized there is potential for voices such as ours to unify and be amplified.

We felt it was important to shed much needed light on this insidious form of abuse, that is often justified and passed off as acceptable in the garb of “discipline”. Hence Purple Speaks was created.

Why “Purple Speaks”?

Bruises resulting from physical abuse are clearly visible and tell a story. The testimonials here are narratives by the “invisible” purple bruises. Marks left on the psyche of individuals by the barrage of verbal and non-verbal emotional abuse they were subjected to as students.

It is time for this Purple to come forward and raise its voice.

To initiate a dialogue between children, teachers and parents.
