Why Looking For Work Still Sucks
Booming economy, new daily job postings, all-time high productivity, and yet it takes way too long to find any work.
Sunday I saw a miracle happen.
One of the patrons at my local game store received a job offer. They’re a teacher and has been supply teaching for a while now. With no guarantee of being assigned a classroom in September and teachers don’t get paid during the summer break, they’re out of a job.
When talking about they’re plight, another patron offered them work. They own an event setup company and are currently looking for more hands.
The job offer was declined (the teacher would only be working for a few months before leaving to prioritize teaching classes or being a supply teacher), but it was a phenomenon that I consider quite rare.
It’s a textbook example of one piece of career advice:
If you want to get a job, it’s better to expand your network as people will understand your character more. Landing a job these days is about who you know rather than what you know.
