The act of collecting items is a practice as old as time. Perhaps as humans we are instinctively drawn to collecting things. In the NFT space, Collectible NFTs tap into that deep-seated desire. In this guide, we’ll dive into the world of Collectible NFTs.
NFTs made for collectors
NFTs are non-fungible tokens that leverage blockchain technology to ensure the uniqueness and proof of ownership of each item. In the past, NFTs were simply seen as ‘digital art’ consisting of image files. However, in recent years, the scope of NFTs has expanded to include a wide array of assets encompassing everything from video, music, and even physical assets such as real estate.
Collectible NFTs, as the name suggests, have certain qualities that appeal specifically to collectors. While there isn’t a definitive metric by which we can measure collectability, it’s generally defined by an item’s scarcity and the resultant expectation of future economic value. In other words, characteristics which encourage the desire to collect, makes it ‘collectible.’ To better understand Collectible NFTs, let’s explore some notable examples.
Examples of Collectible NFTs
It’s impossible to talk about Collectible NFTs without mentioning CryptoPunks. Created in 2017, Cryptopunks are pixelated portrait NFTs. There are 10,000 items in the collection, with the rarity of each item determined by the character’s hairstyles and accessories. Initially, the creators gave away punks for free for a small gas fee. Since then, their status as one of the first NFT projects on the Ethereum blockchain, as well as their limited quantity, has driven up the demand for punks and consequently, their price tag; the highest sale of a CryptoPunk went for over 20 million USD. Their recognized value has led prestigious auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s to feature CryptoPunks in their art auctions.
Another notable example of Collectible NFTs is Hashmarks, a collection of digital portraits created by over 70 artists around the world. While the different masks and backgrounds in the portraits help set the collection apart, its biggest feature is that the NFT’s owner can name the collectible. Of the 16,384 portraits, no two NFTs can share the same name, allowing the consumers to create rarity with their choice of name. This makes Hashmarks a unique collectible project in which creator and consumer co-create the NFT’s value. Collectible NFTs are defined by their collectability, and preserving that value is a central challenge for any collection. Hashmarks addressed that dilemma by introducing rarity through naming. Let’s take a look at how other NFTs maintain collectible value.
How NFTs preserve “collectible” status
CoffeeBits Bath Club introduces rarity through the ability to mutate or alter the traits of its NFTs. The Bath Club collection consists of 3333 pixel-art portraits featuring characters, called ‘Bathers’, relaxing in mugs of coffee. Each NFT has seven traits, including the clothes the character is wearing, the cup they are holding, and the mug they are relaxing in. Owners can use another NFT, called a Caffeine Card, to alter the Bather’s traits. As each Caffeine Card possesses its own unique rarity, the rarity of Bather NFT will constantly vary depending on which Caffeine Card the owner decides to use. This collection clearly aims not only to preserve, but also to enhance the rarity and value of its NFTs through ongoing evolution.
Another example of NFTs evolving to generate new value is Mostly Frens. This NFT features a collection of anthropomorphized flamingo characters issued initially in a dull gray tone. Owners can use $SHRIMP, a utility token in the NFT’s universe, to evolve the Frens and add color. The process, which occurs in four stages, is compared to the four stages of sleep. Upon reaching the last REM stage, the original black and white NFT is reborn as a colorful and vivid NFT. While one might assume the last REM stage NFT would be the most valuable, the collection plans to take it a step further. Users will be able to combine three REM-stage NFTs to create an animated Best Frens NFT.
NFT collecting creates excitement for the future
Like any other collectible item, the value of Collectible NFTs is determined by collector supply and demand. Collectors revel in acquiring rare NFTs, especially with the prospect of future financial returns. It’s deeply satisfying when an item collected for pure enjoyment yields a monetary reward, validating the collector’s passion and effort. 수집은 문명의 시작부터 인류와 함께했던 취미라고 해요. 어쩌면 인간은 본능적으로 무언가를 모으고 싶어 하는 마음이 드는 건지도 모르겠어요. NFT(Non-Fungible Token) 세계에도 우리의 수집 욕구를 자극하는 NFT들이 있어요. Collectible NFT(이하 컬렉터블 NFT)라고 불리는 NFT들인데요. 오늘은 이 컬렉터블 NFT에 관해 같이 알아봐요.
모으고 싶은 NFT는 따로 있다
NFT는 블록체인 기술을 활용해 그 안에 담긴 자산의 고유성과 소유권을 보장하는 하나의 대체할 수 없는 토큰이에요. 과거에는 이미지 파일 정도가 담겨있는 ‘디지털 아트’라는 인식이 강했지만, 최근에는 영상이나 음악은 물론이고 부동산 같은 현실의 자산까지 연동하는 시도가 이어지고 있어요. NFT가 보장하는 자산의 영역이 점점 더 넓어지고 있는 셈이죠.
컬렉터블 NFT는 ‘수집 가치가 있는 NFT’라는 이름에서 추측해 볼 수 있듯, 수집가에게 있어 모으고 싶은 요소를 담고 있는 NFT라고 할 수 있어요. 물론 수집 가치라는 건 딱 떨어지는 숫자로 계산할 수 있거나 명확한 기준으로 판단하기에는 모호한 가치예요. 컬렉터블 NFT는 희소성이 보다 강조되거나 이로 인한 미래의 경제적 가치를 기대해 볼 수 있어 수집욕을 자극해 보편적인 ‘수집품’으로 인식되는 NFT라고 볼 수 있죠. 어떤 NFT인지 감이 잘 오지 않는다면 함께 몇 가지 컬렉터블 NFT를 살펴봐요.
예시로 알아보는 컬렉터블 NFT
2017년에 발행된 CryptoPunks(크립토펑크)를 빼놓고 컬렉터블 NFT를 이야기하기는 어려울 거예요. CryptoPunks는 픽셀로 그린 초상화 형태의 NFT예요. 헤어 스타일이나 착용한 소품처럼 희귀도가 다른 다양한 속성을 갖고 있는 10,000개의 NFT죠. 처음에는 소량의 가스비만 지불하면 무료로 얻을 수 있던 CryptoPunks는 이더리움 블록체인의 최초 NFT 프로젝트 중 하나라는 상징성과 한정된 수량이라는 희소성이 만든 수요 덕분에 높은 가격을 형성하고 있어요. 가장 비싸게 거래된 CryptoPunks가 2,000만 달러가 넘는 금액으로 거래된 바 있죠. 그 가치를 인정받아 소더비나 크리스티 같은 전통적인 미술품 경매에서도 거래가 이루어지기도 했고요.
전 세계 70명 이상의 아티스트가 제작에 참여한 초상화 NFT Hashmasks(해시마스크)도 대표적인 컬렉터블 NFT의 사례 중 하나로 꼽혀요. 초상화의 인물이 착용한 마스크나 작품의 배경 등 다양한 특성이 섞여 만들어 내는 개성 있는 생김새도 눈여겨볼 만하지만, Hashmasks가 다른 NFT와 구별되는 가장 큰 특징은 NFT를 구매한 소유자가 NFT의 이름을 정할 수 있다는 점이에요. 총 16,384개의 초상화 중 똑같은 이름을 가진 NFT는 있을 수 없으므로 소유자가 NFT에 어떤 이름을 지어주는지에 따라 새로운 희소성을 부여할 수 있어요. 그렇기에 Hashmasks는 창작자와 소유자가 함께 가치를 만드는 컬렉터블 NFT로 평가받고 있죠. 컬렉터블 NFT는 수집 가치가 곧 정체성이라고 할 수 있어요. 어떻게 그 가치를 지켜나가느냐는 모든 컬렉터블 NFT의 숙제라고 할 수 있죠. Hashmasks가 이름을 통해 새로운 희소성을 부여한 것처럼요. 컬렉터블 NFT가 계속해서 컬렉터블 NFT라고 불릴 수 있도록 다른 NFT는 어떤 노력을 기울이고 있을까요?
컬렉터블 NFT가 ‘컬렉터블’ NFT로 남기 위해
CoffeeBits Bath Club(커피비츠 배스 클럽)은 NFT가 가진 특성을 바꿀 수 있도록 해 새로운 희소성을 만들어 가요. Bather(배서)라는 별명을 가진 이 NFT는 머그잔에 몸을 담그고 있는 캐릭터가 그려진 3,333개의 초상화 NFT 컬렉션이에요. 각 NFT는 캐릭터가 입은 옷, 들고 있는 컵과 몸을 담그고 있는 머그잔 등 7가지 특성으로 구성되어 있어요. 소유자는 Caffeine Card(카페인 카드)라는 또 다른 NFT를 활용해 Bather의 특성을 바꿀 수 있죠. Caffeine Card 또한 각각이 고유한 희소성을 지닌 NFT로 어떤 Caffeine Card를 적용하느냐에 따라 내가 가진 Bather의 희소성을 계속해서 달리할 수 있어요. 고정되지 않고 계속해서 변화하는 특성으로 NFT의 가치를 지켜가고자 하는 노력으로 볼 수 있죠.
NFT의 진화를 통해 새로운 가치를 만드는 사례도 있어요. Mostly Frens(모스틀리 프렌즈)는 플라밍고를 의인화한 NFT 컬렉션이에요. 모든 Mostly Frens는 흑백의 색상으로 발행되며, 세계관에서 사용되는 유틸리티 토큰인 $SHRIMP(쉬림프달러)를 활용해 NFT에 색상을 입혀나갈 수 있어요.
총 네 번에 걸쳐 이뤄지는 이 과정은 수면의 네 단계에 비유돼요. 마지막 과정인 REM(렘) 단계에 이르면 흑백이었던 NFT는 완전한 색을 갖춘 NFT로 다시 태어나죠. REM 단계의 NFT는 그 자체로도 가장 높은 가치를 지니게 될 텐데요. 더 나아가 세 개의 REM 단계 NFT를 조합해 애니메이션이 적용된 Best Frens(베스트 프렌즈) NFT를 만들 수 있도록 할 예정이라고 해요.
미래를 기대하게 만드는 NFT 수집 생활
