AWS RDS is a powerful cloud-based database management system that allows users to set up, operate, and scale relational databases with ease. One of the most useful features of AWS RDS is the ability to create read replicas of your primary database.

These replicas can be used to offload read traffic from the primary database and improve application performance. In some cases, you may need to promote a read replica to a standalone database. This may be necessary if you need to perform maintenance on the primary database, or if you want to make the read replica of the new primary database. In this blog, we will walk you through the steps to promote an AWS RDS read replica to a standalone database.

Step 1: Create a snapshot of the read replica

Before promoting the read replica to a standalone database, it’s important to create a snapshot of the read replica. This is a precautionary measure to ensure that you have a backup of the database in case anything goes wrong during the promotion process. To create a snapshot, navigate to the AWS RDS console, select the read replica, and click on the “Actions” dropdown menu. From there, select “Take Snapshot” and follow the prompts to create a snapshot.
