From May 15th — 19th, QARA’s CEO and Founder Luke Changhwan Byun and Global Marketer James Ihn flew together to Paris, France to attend this year’s VivaTech 2019 Conference.
Viva Technology, or VivaTech, held its first annual conference in 2016 hosted by Publicis Groupe and Groupe Les Echos, recording a near 50,000 attendees including investors, startups, and general visitors. In its 2018 edition, that crowd grew to over 100,000 people. From world-class speakers to global leaders from various industries, VivaTech brings a unique opportunity for innovators of all kinds to connect and meet for possible partnerships.
After going through an extensive application process, including a pitch session at Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (GCCEI), QARA was among a few Korean startups to be selected by the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) to attend VivaTech 2019. For the first two days of the conference (5/16–17), QARA met with several investors and potential business partners at its booth. Then on the last day (5/18), QARA talked with regular consumers, including students who showed genuine interest in applying for an internship at our company.
Day 1 & 2
Through KOTRA, QARA was able to score important business meetings with several key players in the financial sector, including BNP Paribas which is France’s leading international banking group.
Many professionals from various industries sought QARA and its services. But instead of focusing on KOSHO, our user-friendly mobile app meant for individual investors, we introduced our B2B2C solution called Whatisfund.ai.
They were intrigued by the technology and its features. People who are well-versed in financial terms and have years of experience investing or managing portfolios understood the convenience of this search engine tool. In particular, they were especially interested in learning more about our events analysis feature. This feature shows how your selected stock performed during a specific financial event in history. For example, if you want to see how “Netflix” performed during the Financial Crisis in 2008, you can see its yield rate compared to major indexes and other industry competitors.
On the last day, QARA talked with the general public. Most of these individuals entered VivaTech with the intention to walk around and sightsee some new technologies being developed around the world. Because these were regular consumers, we decided to focus more on our KOSHO app.
Similar to our past exhibitions, we showcased our mobile app and introduced some new features and functions. One French student recall giving a positive feedback about our overall user experience as well as its simple UI design. Another customer said because French education doesn’t focus too much in finance or economics earlier on, many people don’t feel too comfortable about investing in general. In any case, through this experience, we were able to bring back useful insights to further develop our application.
A friendly reminder, KOSHO is a financial forecasting and analytics application. It utilizes the latest AI deep learning technology to help individual investors forecast the markets and help make smarter investment decisions. It’s currently available to download for free in the App Store and Google Play Store. Included in the datasets are 20,000 + global stocks, 36 major financial indexes, and 24 cryptocurrencies.
On the first full day of arrival (5/15), QARA visited the Korean Embassy in Paris. Only one person from each team was allowed to attend, so James volunteered to participate since he was scheduled to pitch that day.
QARA was among 9 Korean startups to pitch at the Korean Embassy. In the audience sat many important figures in the trade economic development field, including the Korean Ambassador Jongmoon Choi. James pitched for 5 minutes and shared about QARA’s mission as well as its core business model.
Immediately afterwards, James stayed to attend a networking session to meet with fellow startups and exchange business cards with investors and members from the media.
