Lemon Headpiece

Each month Scholars of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust have been invited to take over a window display at jeweller’s Garrard’s flagship store in Mayfair.

August saw QEST milliner, Deirdre Hawken, showcase her exquisite collection of contemporary couture hats. Deirdre’s handcrafted art headpieces are colourfully quirky and a witty spin on a traditional craft.

“I was given total freedom to do whatever I liked in the window — to use just the showcase or to decorate the whole window, which is huge! A lot of fore-thought goes into the presentation for a display, not just the pieces you’ve made.

I was provided with a very chic, modern showcase with excellent lighting, with antiglare facilities which protected my work from fading in the sun, this was an important factor for me because all my headpieces are hand dyed.

I chose to keep my display in the showcase very minimal with a plain white background; my pieces were displayed on small acrylic stands in a minimal setting. I then decorated each side of the of the large window with my hat boxes, which are inscribed with my name, I added a couple more headpieces which were arranged to spill out of the boxes.”

Editor’s Note: How was the overall experience?

“I was so pleased to be invited to showcase my work at Garrard and the staff could not have been more helpful! I’d recommend it.”

A feast for the eyes!
