General Information on Surah Baqara

Surah Baqara is second and longest surah of Quran. This surah is also called mini Quran. Surah Baqara is a Madni Surah indicating it was revealed after Migration. It has 286 verses. In Arabic Baqara means “cow”. This surah adapts its name from an incident mentioned in it where ALLAH (S.W.T) commanded Bani Israel to use the flesh of cow to find out the actual killer. Ideally this Surah deals with laws, history, beliefs, and mortality of human beings.

First Section (Verses 1–39) — 4 DAYS

The surah begins by mentioning the virtues of those who believe and follow the commands of their Creator. An indication is then made towards hypocrites, and through various examples it is explained no matter what they say or do, they can never be true to Islamic values. It then made a reference to Satan’s arrogance and pride, followed by the reservations of angels and their (angels) succeeding approval when ALLAH (S.W.T) disclosed the decision of Khilafat of Man. The angels believed that Man would bring mischief to land. But Allah (S.W.T) through his wisdom proved them wrong and made them realize that verily He knows best.

Second Section (Verses 40–121) — 8 DAYS

This section can further be divided into three main subsections

Verses 40–46

This section specifically urged Bani Israel to have complete faith in Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) and to fulfill their promise to support Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) as mentioned in the Torah. Allah warns them to behold from any malicious tactics to mix wrong with the right. Allah urged them to serve in the path of truth and ask for Allah’s help through prayers.

Verses 47–63

In this section, Allah (S.W.T) free Jews from their longed believed illusion. Jews believed that they were rewarded by Allah (S.W.T) because of their status and their association to prophet Ibrahim (A.S).They believed that this could also become a source to save them from hellfire. But Allah (S.W.T) made it clear that in Hereafter, everybody will be awarded on the basis of his faith and deeds. Your particular connection with any family will not bring any advantage to you. The only thing that could save them is following in the footprints of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H).

Verses 64–121

The last part mentions the criminal mentality of Jews. It made a reference to the breach of contract and their traitor ship that had always compelled them to disobey the commands of Allah (S.W.T). It also points towards their superstitious beliefs and similar activities which are contrary to debasing the Book of Allah.

Third Section (Verses 122–162) — 4 DAYS

This section covers the life of Ibrahim (A.S). It pens down the event of building of Ka’ba. When Ibrahim (A.S) began the construction of Holy Ka’ba, he prayed to Allah (S.W.T) to grant a prophet from his progeny who would lead Muslim Ummah to Jannah. It also reveals that the religion of Ibrahim (A.S) and his offsprings was Islam and not Christianity or Judaism. It describes the desire of Prophet Mohammad to offer prayers with his direction towards Ka’ba. Allah fulfilled his wish and made it clear that Holy Ka’ba was and will always remain qiblah for Muslims. The bait-ul-Muqaddas was just a short-term qiblah which was always meant to be changed.

Fourth Section (Verses 163–242) — 8 DAYS

This section ideally describes the code of conduct that every Muslim must follow in order to live a successful life. It talks about various Islamic laws including:

· Zakat and prayers.

· Fast.

· Deeyat and Qisaas.

· Hajj.

· Gambling.

· Wills and legacies.

· Tawheed.

· Marriage and Divorce.

· Prevention of bribery.

· Rights of orphans.

Fifth Section (Verses 243–286) — 4 DAYS

This section talks about four main subjects

Firstly Allah (S.W.T) motivates the Muslims for the jihad against the oppressor of Makkah in order to free the Holy Ka’ba from idols. It then points towards the battle fought against Palestinians by Bani Israel to liberate qiblah from them. A comparison is made of this battle to the battle of Badar highlighting the similarities between the two.

As the Surah progresses it, through multiple examples, makes a clear distinction among the people who are eligible to receive guidance from Allah and the one whose faith lies in the darkness of hell.

It then stresses the importance, characteristics, and conditions associated with charity and made a clear indication about its recipients. This part also explains the prohibition of interest in Islam defining it cause of class difference in societies.

The last two verses sum up Surah. They state that verily every Muslims believes in the teachings of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H) and other prophets, angels and books of Allah (S.W.T). It makes a clear indication that Allah (S.W.T) is just of all. And that no one will carry the burden more than it can bear. And finally, the Surah ends with a beautiful Dua.
