Next’ 18 at Moscone West and South

About two weeks ago, I attended Google Cloud Next ’18 San Francisco. This is an article about personal recap of Next’ 18, mostly photos though. If you are looking for the services or products that were announced during the conference, all the announcements are listed in the official blog.

Getting a budge.

Conference starts from getting a badge at reception.

And with crowded entrance…

Too many attendees for Keynotes

Keynotes

All the sessions are uploaded to YouTube, off course including Keynotes.

Keynotes at Moscone South

Starting from Google Cloud Platform CEO

Keynotes was started with talk from CEO Diane Greene.

So many cool announcements!

There were too many announcements to catch up.

Istio1.0

Istio is reaching 1.0 and Managed Istio integrated with GKE is going to be launched.

GKE On-Prem!

GKE Cluster was running right on the stage!

TPU 3rd Generation and Edge TPU

New generation of Tensorflow Processing Unit and edge computing chip with the size of penny.

Auto ML Natural Language and Translation

In addition to the existing Auto ML Vision, Natural Language and Translation is now available in beta.

Other than the those above, there were many announcements for Google Cloud Platform, Google Map Platform and G Suite.

Lunch Time!

Coffee, Snacks, Sandwiches were offered.

Sessions

Sessions are one of the most beneficial parts of conference. You can get a real world cases form users, and ask them questions.

I choose sessions related to

  • Machine Learning
  • SRE
  • Infrastructure

Here’s the list of sessions I attended

7/24

  • Building Multi-Tenancy ML Applications with GKE and Istio to Better Understand the Earth
  • Large-Scale Continuous Delivery at Netflix and Waze Using Spinnaker
  • SRE Quality Operations for Your Services Using the Istio Service Mesh and Google Stackdriver
  • Improving Reliability with Error Budgets, Metrics and Tracing in Stackdriver

7/25

  • GKE Architecture Patterns for Retail and Financial Services
  • Introduction to Service Management with Istio Service Mesh
  • Best Practices from Google SRE: How You Can Use Them with GKE + Istio
  • Spotify’s Journey to the Cloud

7/26

  • Machine Learning on Open Hybrid Clouds with Kubeflow
  • Introduction to Kubeflow on Google Kubernetes Engine Lab

Best session for me: SRE

Best session for me was “Improving Reliability with Error Budgets, Metrics and Tracing in Stackdriver”, as I am working in the SRE team.

Session includes summary of SRE practices, implantation of DevOps, and expands to example with Stackdriver.

More information about Stackdriver EAP features is here.

SRE Workbook

New SRE book, “The Site Reliability Workbook” was handed out for free. This book is available online for free until 23rd this month.

That’s all for my Next’18 recap part 1. Not sure if I write part 2 though. Overall I really enjoyed the conference and learned a lot. Conference is one of the great opportunities for collecting, sharing, and discussing information.

One more thing, I’m speaking at the Next’18 Tokyo. Here is my session, in Japanese though. I’m going to talk about practices in our SRE team with Stackdriver.
