Onboarding new engineers at Qoala
In one of my previous articles, I wrote about how Qoala recruits talent, and it makes sense to expose what happens from day one to being productive on the job as an engineer.
We want this experience to be as smooth as possible so that you can be successful in your career with us and know in advance what to expect. We are always working to improve.
Day 1
Each new hire is assigned a mentor to contact for all onboarding related questions. This is an experienced senior software engineer or team leader. This day typically focuses on introducing the HR team, providing information on salaries, company policies, and various other operational knowledge. On that day, they will also meet the team lead and have a 1: 1 session.
Normally the team would go out to lunch that day to meet the new hires.
General Advice for all our Hires
- What information do you need to start contributing?
- What do you need access to?
- What hypotheses are you starting to develop?
- What’s an easy win in the first month?
- What key open questions do you have?
The team lead or the engineering manager then prepares a 30–60–90 Plan for the new hire.
