Food Tour Friday #13: Penyet Town
Fridays are meant for Food Tours! And we’re off again to fill our rumblin’ tummies and excite our taste buds.
Nestled at a corner of OneKM mall, lay a cozy setting of wooden tables and a gigantic menu of different varieties of servings of Ayam Penyet. We were immediately sold when we heard that we’re going to Penyet Town! It had such a nice ring to it, we already knew we’re gonna have some smashingly good food!

‘Penyet’ actually means smashed in Indonesian, and it’s a unique way of cooking this dish! This scrumptious dish is prepped by marinating the chicken in Indonesian spices, and then deep fried before being SMASHED! Smashing the chicken actually makes it softer, tender and creates more ‘chicken juice’ (I don’t think it’s actually called that, but you get what I mean. :P). Traditionally, Ayam Penyet is served with a layer of brown crispy crumbs and ground sambal along with fried tofu and tempeh.

We’ve heard nothing but good things about Penyet Town, so we were really excited to give it a taste! Most of us ordered the Ayam Penyet dish, but we also tried out the Mi Soto, it’s not too bad, but of course we preferred the Ayam Penyet. Both dishes are reasonably priced, considering its large portion.
The succulent meat of the fried chicken was juicy with a crunch, which made it a perfect complement to its companion, fragrant white rice. What we liked best about this whole dish is undoubtedly the red hot sambal! Roughly ground chili with a tinge of belacan flavor, its spiciness made the succulent chicken so much more appetising.

At the end of this hearty, spicy meal, it left our tummies so full, we could barely make our way back to the office! We’d definitely be back for more Ayam Penyet to satiate our taste buds with some Indonesian cuisine. Stay tuned for more on our Food Tour Fridays!
