For those that mourned the absence of our weekly Food Tour Fridays the past few weeks, we have a special dessert edition for you!

Desserts, if you didn’t know, is an anagram of stressed. An anagram, if you didn’t know, is the result of rearranging the letters of a word to form a new word. This led us to the conclusion that desserts are meant to alleviate the problems of the stressed souls. Not to say that they aren’t meant for any other occasion, but they are exceptionally more uplifting when your mood’s a downer.

A good number of us were at least mildly upset at the second-rated lunch. We normally have ace food on our Food Tours! Luckily, there was a foodie amongst us who was determined to save our trip, and not let our cab fares go to waste. We scouted for other foods to fill our stomachs.

Our prayers were eventually answered with Rochor Beancurd House! Just a short walk down the street from where we came from, we danced our way to dessert!

There’s always space for dessert.

In the recent years with the take over of Lao Ban Beancurd and the pudding-like beancurd craze it set off, so stepping into Rochor Beancurd House was like taking a sweet stroll down memory lane. Their traditional beancurd scooped up in chunks and served in sugar syrup was how I fondly remember having beancurd as a kid.

Many of us ordered their chilled beancurd. Fellow Qolleagues commented that to have beancurd served hot is a sin. Their beancurd was silky and light, just as they are famous for.

We also had their cold soya bean drinks that were perfectly refreshing for such a hot day. The health conscious amongst us opted for to have it siew dai (less sweet). However, we learnt that when you’re already gobbling down dessert, being health conscious doesn’t exactly pay off. The siew dai soya bean was bland, and tasted like water. Sweets prevailed.

Rochor Beancurd House also sells dim sum, and deep fried traditional treats like you tiao and ham cheem peng. It was served hot, and relatively fresh. The fried food were a nice side to our cold dishes.

Overall, our Rochor Beancurd House experience was a lovely one. The saving grace that day, in fact. I guess the moral of the story here is that desserts never disappoint! Get fat, and stay happy.

Rating: First class!
