Food Tour Friday #9
After a two week hiatus, we are finally back with our ninth edition of Food Tour Friday! This week, drove around the block to New Scissors-cut Curry Rice! The original Scissors-cut Curry Rice at Jalan Besar is highly raved, and we were hopeful that this outlet would provide the same stand of gooey sticky goodness.

For the unfortunate ones who have yet to experience Hainanese curry rice, it is essentially cai png, which I’m sure we are all too familiar with. The speciality of Hainanese curry rice is in the addition of thick gooey curry. Fret not though, these curries are much milder in flavour, and is very manageable for those who would otherwise avoid spicy food.
Tucked in a corner, this traditional shop lot is nothing to ogle about. And their curry rice did not look as appetising either. Slimy and brown, curry rice isn’t what you’d call photogenic. Definitely giving this a miss on Instagram!
But then again, as they say, its what’s on the inside that counts.
We ordered individual plates, and they stacked our liao into mountains on top of our rice. Highly recommended as a side for curry rice is their pork cutlet, which most of us ordered. They also have other sides like vegetables and seafood.

Unfortunately, we did not catch the iconic scissors cutting process, which is what gives them their name. Everything was prepared beforehand, which to their benefit, aided in their efficiency in service.
After stacking our plates, they flooded it with scoops of curry and dark sauce. Our rice was swimming in the curry, but hey, no complains there! This is what makes the dish, right?

We dug into the dishes, optimistic for flavour despite it’s less than pleasing exterior. To be honest, we were a little disappointed. The curry was a little bland and underwhelming for all the hype that surrounded it. The sotong that also came highly recommended, did not hit our high expectations. To be fair, their pork cutlet was decent and that was their saving grace.
This was a slight standard above the conventional curry rice you get at hawker centers, with the ingredients being noticeably fresher. A curry rice connoisseur in our team commented that at least the pork cutlets here have not lau hong-ed (go soft).
To their benefit, New Scissors-cut Curry Rice did serve decent food. Although nothing compared to the expectations we had, it was decent and palatable nonetheless. It was collectively agreed upon that there was nothing special about it that would warrant a second visit, or the effort of travelling.
Tummies unsatisfied, we ventured further down the lane for dessert! Stay tuned for our bonus Food Tour Friday feature that I’m sure will leave you soy hungry after!
Rating: Second Class !
