Artificial intelligence (AI) is the term used to describe a broad range of algorithms that can perform specific tasks with human-level accuracy. AI has been around since the 1950s when researchers began experimenting with ways to mimic human behavior through computer programs. Since then, numerous advancements in AI technology have made it a key component in many industries today.

In 1956, John McCarthy founded the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence. Here, he coined the term “Artificial Intelligence” and outlined his vision for research into intelligent machines capable of thinking like humans. This marked the beginning of modern-day AI research and development.

The late 1960s saw a sharp increase in the public interest and private investment in Artificial Intelligence technologies. During this time, advances were made in natural language processing, robotics, neural networks, and machine learning algorithms as researchers sought to build ever more sophisticated forms of AI. This period also saw some of the first commercially available AI products, such as ELIZA — a natural language processing program developed by Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory — and Shakey — the first mobile robot capable of autonomous navigation and problem-solving.

The 1980s were a boom for AI development as computer hardware became more powerful and widely accessible. During this decade, researchers developed expert systems — computer programs capable of simulating the judgment processes used by experts — and content-based image retrieval systems which could search databases for images based on their pixel content rather than text descriptions.

By the 1990s, public interest in AI had waned somewhat. Still, advances continued to be made in speech recognition software, machine vision systems, and automated planning tools designed to help robots navigate complex environments autonomously. At this time, IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer famously defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov setting a new benchmark for machine intelligence — but it was not until 1997, when IBM’s computer Watson won Jeopardy against two all-time champions, that confidence in AI returned among wider public audiences.

From 2000 onwards, research has progressed further with breakthroughs made in areas such as automatic summarization technology — programs capable of generating concise summaries from large volumes of data — and facial recognition algorithms used widely by corporations and governments across the world to provide secure access control. Generative algorithms have gained widespread attention recently for their impressive ability to produce short and long-form responses to natural language queries, generate images from text and even produce functional code samples.

Recent years have seen a rapid advancement in AI technology fueled mainly by increasing investments from Silicon Valley tech companies who are intently focused on exploring potential applications for deep learning algorithms — a subset within machine learning that deals with analyzing vast datasets using a large number of neural network layers.

In addition, commercial success stories such as Apple’s Siri virtual assistant, Amazon’s Alexa home automation platform, and Tesla’s Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system demonstrate just how far AI technologies have come since their beginnings almost 70 years ago.

Today, we are entering into what many believe will be an era where Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), machines with broad cognitive abilities rivaling that of humans, will become commonplace. Numerous breakthroughs are being made every day, enabling us to build ever more sophisticated forms of AI and demonstrating what incredible things can be achieved when computers start thinking like us. Although much about its future remains uncertain, one thing is beyond doubt — Artificial Intelligence is here to stay.
